Some of the trains of indian Railways & their brief history
The information below is based on the details available on Net & various inputs by friends including members of IRFCA
Pre-independance

The Bangalore Mail has been running in various guises since 1864

in 1866 ,first through train run between Delhi _Howrah after completing jamuna bridge at Nainee & was extended to Kalka around 1890 after laying of track between delhi-Kalka.

in 1870 first train run between Bombay _calcutta after completing thull ghat tunnels

The world's first commercial MG sevice runs from Delhi to Rewari in 1873.

Normally all the mail trains have their origin in past as these trains were carry postal mail & some of them were connecting to port town
Madras mail ,Calcutta mail via Nagpur & via allahabad ,the Frontier Mail, Punjab Mail, , Assam Mail, Lucknow Mail, Kashmir Mail ( Delhi and Pathankot)Amritsar mail

Srinagar Express was there in the TT of the early 1960s. It may have
started after completion of the Mukerian-Pathankot section in 1952.
(Prior to that the only way to reach Pathankot was via Amritsar and
Batala. The Kashmir Mail was running by this route in 1950.)

some trains history is documented vy sri shankar in classical trains of india (http://www.irfca.org/~shankie/famoustrains/famoushome.htm)

PUNJAB MAIL--Punjab mail from Bombay VT to Peshawar started on 13 th june 1911 .some details say it started on 1st june 1912 from BallardPier(any confirmation )

speed of Calcutta mail was raised from 35 mile per hr to 40 mile per hr
in between Ambala- Delhi in 1939-40 (ref book on NR)
DECCAN QUEEN-Deccan Queen was introduced on ist june 1930 between Poona-Victoria terminus

FRONTIER MAIL-Bombay central station was opened on 18th dec 1930 & first train to work from this terminal was Frontier mail (The Bombay to Peshawar Frontier Mail made her maiden run from Colaba station on 1 Sept. 1928) .other trains which used to run from Bombay central at that time is Bombay-Peshawer express(later Dehradun exp),Rajputana-sind mail( later janta express) ,,Gujrat mail & Kathiawar mail (later renamed Saurastra mail)

FLYING MAIL-Flying Mail was considered to be the fastest train from Delhi to Karachi, despite its taking a slightly circuitous route via Lahore. The Delhi-Karachi Flying Mail used to depart from Delhi at noontime, and reach Karachi by about 1800 hrs. the next day.
After partition of India in 1947, the service was curtailed, and the Flying Mail ran only until Amritsar from Delhi, something it did year after year till its withdrawal from service in 2001.

FLYING RANI The Flying Ranee first started off as a Weekend Special in 1906. She stopped running eight years later, on 24 April, 1914, to be exact. The train was re-introduced on 1 May, 1937 as the Flying Ranee (also referred to as the Flying Queen), only to be reigned in again in 1939, due to the World War. A long-ish period of lying dormant, the Flying Ranee resumed duties for the third time on 1 Nov. 1950

GRAND TRUNK EXPRESS-The GT started running in 1929, on completion of the Kazipet - Ballarshah line, which was the last missing link in the Delhi - Madras trunk route. When introduced, the train ran between Peshawar and Mangalore, almost the length of the country and beyond. If fact, the GT was probably one of the longest running trains in the country at that time. The Peshawar to Mangalore run took about 104 hrs in all.The end points were later changed to Lahore and Mettupalayam. Hence, the Mangalore - Peshawar Grand Trunk Express now became the Mettupalayam - Lahore Grand Trunk Express. The train probably provided the goraa sahibs (white gentlemen) an escape route into the Nilgiri Hills to the popular hill station of Ootacamund (Ooty), in order to escape the oppressive heat of Southern India. As you know, Mettupalayam was the hop off point for the m.g. Nilgiri Mountain Railway to Ooty. One year later however, in 1930, the route was heavily curtailed, and the GT began to run from New Delhi to Madras, which it does till this very day.

some detail about toofan mail

In the late 1930's, this train was indeed called Toofan Mail(7 up/8 dn). . Anotherinteresting piece of information : Too fan Mail used to run via Grand Chord(via DHN, GYA)and not Main Line (via PNBE) as it does now and a Dining Car was also available .

somebody could tell us when exactly the train was renamed as Toofan Express and re-routed via Main Line.

some information about pragraj express

On persistent demand from the travelling public, the then MOR, Shri ABA GhaniKhan Chowdhury introduced the Prayagraj Express in mid-1984(most probably 15.8.1984).

It was numbered as 91 up and 92 down (later it became 17/18 and then
2417/2418)and the rake was generally made up of the slip coaches
released from these trains.

It was a 12-14 coach train with GS, 1AC,
2AC, FC and 3T Sleeper coaches. It was hauled by a GZB WAM 4(20xxx)
with stoppages only at CNB and FTP. No doubt it ran almost always on
time or even before-time, being detaimned at Bamhrauli or Subedarganj for doing so because Platform No. 1 at ALD had to be emptied for her to arrive.

No doubt Prayagraj under-went revolutionary changes over the years -
being converted into a 26 coach train with a WAP5 loco and new
stoppages at GZB, ALJN and TDL. Now we are looking forward to its new avatar- a branded train.

some facts about the Old Jayanti Janata Express between ERS and NZM. This train was started during Railway Minster TA Pai's time in the early 1970s.

an old man who had the fortune of travelling by the inaugural train on his way to Itarsi enroute to JBP from ERS had mentioned that it was a thrilling trip because the train had a onboard library and also a dining car !!
