Speed trials conducted on new Kodai Road-Madurai track
It will be ready for use by month-end: Commissioner of Railway Safety
CHECKING IT OUT: Commissioner of Railway Safety - Southern Railway, K.J.S.Naidu (seated right), inspecting the newly converted broad gauge track near Sellur in Madurai.

MADURAI: Speed trials were conducted on the new broad gauge track between Kodaikanal Road and Madurai on Tuesday.

The inspection run clocked a speed of 130 km per hour as against the anticipated 100 kmph.

A special technical team led by K.J.S.Naidu, Commissioner of Railway Safety, travelled in the inspection coach, which started its run from Kodaikanal Road and reached Madurai in 25 minutes.

Mr. Naidu said that they were satisfied with the trial. Minor works such as conversion from single line to double line of the signalling system, needed to be done. Safety certification would be given in two days and work would continue for two more weeks.

By the end of the month the track would be available for use.

R. Ramanathan, Chief Administrative Officer (Construction), Southern Railway, elaborating on the Madurai-Bodinayackanur metre gauge conversion, said that it was being done in three phases.

The first would involve linking, the second yard remodelling, which would take six months, and the third phase, removal of the Bodinayackanur metre gauge line.

Anil Singhal, Divisional Railway Manager; V. K. Verma, Chief Engineer (Construction), Southern Railway; and Ilam Puranan, Deputy Chief Engineer (Construction), accompanied the technical team during the speed trials. This gauge conversion would help in substantially reducing the running time of fast and super fast trains.

Insufficient fund allotment may delay BG projects in State

http://www.hindu.com/2009/07/12/stories/2009071254920500.htm

Southern Railway to write to Railway Board

CHENNAI: Insufficient allotment of funds for the current financial year in the recent railway budget may delay the completion of various on-going conversion projects in the State. Southern Railway had demanded Rs.611 crore for gauge C onversion projects alone but it received Rs.245 crore for the current financial year.

Already the zone had spent Rs.135 crore out of Rs.234.8 crore allotted in the
interim budget submitted in February. Available funds for the entire year will
be Rs.10 crore only. As the zone may not have sufficient funds to spend for
gauge conversion projects, Southern Railway is to write to the Railway Board
requesting allotment of more funds for these projects.

According to a senior official of the zone, the Vellore-Villupuram gauge
conversion is one of the targeted projects as per the railway budget. But it
received Rs.50 crore as against the requirement of Rs.105 crore. Already track
linking work is over. Welding, packing of ballasts and station building works
were to be completed.

For the Manamadurai–Virudhunagar gauge conversion, the zone asked for Rs.60 crore, but the allotment was only Rs.21 crore. Another major project which did not receive sufficient funds was Dindigul-Pollachi-Palakkadu. Traffic on the section had been closed and contractors had been fixed for the entire stretch.
As against the requirement of Rs.175 crore for the current year, the Ministry sanctioned Rs.31 crore.

The zone planned to complete the conversion OF MAiladuthurai–Tiruvarur line
by December 2010 to provide direct BG link from Chennai to Nagore. For this, the
zone sought Rs.60 crore but the allotment was only Rs.15 crore.

New lines

For new lines as against the demand of Rs.250 crore, the allotment was Rs.161.73
crore.

The official said that this year the zone wanted to complete the Salem-Namakkal stretch of Salem–Karur new line project. For this, the zone required at least Rs.150 crore. But the allotment was Rs.36 crore. The zone had to divert funds from other new line projects to complete Salem-Namakkal stretch.

For doubling projects, the Ministry had sanctioned Rs.239 crore in the interim budget, which was reduced to Rs.217 crore in the main budget. The zone would demand additional funds for completing Chengalpattu–Villupuram doubling
projects.

The official said as on date about 1,000 km of metre gauge lines were to be
converted and the required fund would be about Rs.2700 crore. The annual
allotment should be of the order of Rs.500 crore if the projects had to be
completed in five years.

But with the current allotment it would take another 10 years for completing the
projects, the official added.

Electrification complete, train services in a month
The Villupuram-Tiruchi BG work taken up at Rs. 96.67 crore

Final check: Officials inspecting the electrified BG track at Tiruchi Railway Junction on Friday.

TIRUCHI: The electrification of the 178.5 km Villupuram-Tiruchi broad gauge track taken up at a cost of Rs.96.67 crore has been completed and normal train services on the electric traction is expected in a month or so, said K. J. S. Naidu, Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), here on Friday.

Clearance report

Talking to media persons at the railway junction here after inspecting the second phase of electrification work including basic infrastructure between Ariyalur and Tiruchi (70 km), Mr. Naidu said that he was satisfied with the work and pointed out that he would send the clearance report to the Railways in a few days.

The CRS pointed out that electrification between Villupuram and Ariyalur was taken up in the first phase and it was commissioned in December last year.

Only goods trains were operated on the electric traction between Villupuram and Ariyalur to feed the cluster of cement plants situated in and around Ariyalur.

No mail or express passenger trains could be run on this section as no facilities are available at Ariyalur for change of traction.

R. P. Udayakumar, Chief Project Manager, Railway Electrification, Chennai, said that the electrification between Ariyalur and Tiruchi that was taken up in the second phase had now been completed.

Ten pairs of trains

The Railways have planned to run 10 pairs of trains under electric traction from Villupuram to Tiruchi after getting clearance.

This will bring down the running time by 10 to 15 minutes. About 20 minutes will get eliminated as the trains will run through without change of traction at Villupuram.

Awaiting power

He pointed out that out of the three electricity sub-stations set up by the Railways at Vriddhachalam, Ariyalur and Tiruchi, two have already been commissioned and the 110 KV sub-station at Tiruchi is ready and waiting for power connection from the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board which is expected in a months time.

Mr. Udayakumar said that the Railways had planned to complete electrification works on the 158-km Tiruchi-Madurai section by March 2010 at a cost of Rs.126 crore of which work on the 92-km stretch between Tiruchi and Dindigul was nearing completion.

The three sub-stations are now being set up at Vayampatti, Dindigul and Koodalnagar and 30 per cent of the work is over.

Similarly, electrification of Tiruchi-Karur-Erode section is on the anvil, Mr. Udayakumar said.

Gauge conversion completed

S. Subramhanyan, Divisional Railway Manager, Tiruchi, said that broad gauge conversion work between Villupuram and Mayiladuturai (122 km) had been completed and a trial run with an engine was slated for July 31. Construction of the two-km-long bridge across the Coleroon took more time.

He pointed out that passenger train services on the main line between Tiruchi and Chennai viz Thanjavur, Kumbakonam, Mayiladuturai, Chidambaram, and Cuddalore would be introduced from end of October or first week of November.

Madurai track electrification by 2010
CHENNAI: With the completion of the Villupuram - Tiruchi electrification, the next phase of work will be on the Tiruchi Madurai section, which Southern Railway plans to complete by March 2010.

R.P. Udayakumar, Chief Project Manager (CPM), Central Organisation for Railway Electrification (CORE), said all physical works had been completed up to Dindigul. Works were in progress on the DindigulMadurai section (66 route km). Being a double-line section, electrification had to be done on both lines (132 km route km). After almost 55 years, Indian Railways had decided to extend the electrification beyond Villupuram in the ChennaiMadurai Kannyakumari section, one of the important trunk routes in the country.

The second phase of work on the AriyalurTiruchi section had been completed. K.J.S. Naidu, Commissioner of Railway Safety, inspected the section along with the CPM and S. Subramhanyan, Divisional Railway Manager, Tiruchi Division, last week.

The CORE official said that the Commissioner had given his oral clearance and an official letter would be received in a day or two.

To start with, 10 pairs of trains would be operated on the Chennai EgmoreTiruchi section on electric traction. Southern Railway sources said that it would be difficult to operate all trains on the section under electric traction in the absence of a traction sub-station at Tiruchi. Though the sub-station was ready in all respects, the TNEB was to complete its transmission line works for extending 110 KV power supply. It has promised to complete the work by August 15. Thereafter, all the trains could be operated on electric traction.

First double railway line in Madurai division commissioned

http://www.hindu.com/2009/07/29/stories/2009072953090300.htm

Guruvayur Express runs between Kodaikanal Road and Madurai

Initially, trains have been permitted to run at a speed of 70 km an hour Installation of signal system to be over in a couple of days

MADURAI: The second broad gauge line between Madurai and Dindigul was fully commissioned on Monday when the Chennai-Guruvayur Guruvayur Express was operated on the newly-converted track between Kodaikanal Road and Madurai.

“All the down trains are now being operated on the second line between Dindigul and Madurai,” Madurai Divisional Railway Manager, Anil Singhal, told The Hindu on Tuesday. Initially, the trains have been permitted to run at a speed of only 70 km per hour. “After the new track gets consolidated, the trains will be speeded up to 100 kmph,” he said.

The second line would provide a great relief to the existing broad gauge track hat experienced over-utilisation of up to 140 per cent. “It would provide greater mobility with better track capacity,” Mr. Singhal said. The availability of an alternative line would avoid major traffic disruption between Dindigul and Madurai.

Stating that goods traffic had picked up in the last two months, he said the second line would enable operation of additional goods train without any delay.

The project to convert the 63-km metre-gauge line that took a little over two years was commissioned in two phases, the Deputy Chief Engineer (Gauge Conversion), A. Ilampooranan, said.

The work began in June 2007 and the first phase of 22-km second line between Dindigul to Kodaikanal Road was commissioned in September.

The second phase between Kodaikanal Road and Madurai was cleared by the Commissioner for Railway Safety, early this month.

As of now trains run on the newly-converted stretch are being delayed as new signal system was being installed.

The work is expected to be over in a couple of days. The project cost is estimated to have escalated to around Rs. 150 crore from its sanctioned cost of Rs.130 crore.

Villupuram-Mayiladuthurai gauge conversion likely to be over soon

S. Vydhianathan

Official hopes line will be available for traffic by November

122-km stretch is remaining portion of Villupuram-Thanjavur conversion project

Once project is completed, another link will be created between Chennai and Tiruchi

CHENNAI: The much delayed Villupuram-Mayiladuthurai gauge conversion is likely to be completed by November this year.

The 122-km stretch is the remaining portion of the Villupuram-Thanjavur conversion project (192 km). The section between Thanjavur and Mayiladuthurai has been converted and opened for traffic.

Track-linking for the entire stretch between Villupuram and Mayiladuthurai has been completed and welding work on joints is on. Once this is over, packing of ballasts, tapping work and signalling work in stations will be taken up. These works will not take more than two months.

Pradeep Gaur, Chief Project Manager, Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd, denying there has been wanton delay in completing the project, recalls that the project was sanctioned in 1999. Till 2006, only 60 km of line was converted. After RVNL took over the project, conversion of the 112-km stretch was completed. This included construction of major bridges.

According to an RVNL official, the project is the most challenging as there are 310 bridges, including 33 major ones, and 18 level-crossings and subways between Villupuram and Mayiladuthurai. As the line runs along the east coast, the sub-soil, where the existing bridges are located, is weak. So RVNL has decided to construct new bridges using pile foundation. Their height has been increased by two to three metres, considering the fact that the Cauvery goes in spate every year.

Another problem encountered by the RVNL is the increasing cost of materials such as cement and iron. Contractors have to be persuaded to continue the work on the assurance that the increase in cost of materials will be sufficiently compensated.

Now all major works have been completed and the official hopes that the line will be available for traffic by November.

A senior Southern Railway official says that once this portion is completed, it will provide another link between Chennai and Tiruchi via Villupuram, Cuddalore, Chidambaram, Mayiladuthurai, and Thanjavur, known as mainline in railway parlance. The official laments that funds allotment for ongoing projects in the State during the current financial year is poor. It will take at least a decade to complete all of them.

Ernakulam-Mulanthuruthy rail doubling to be over by November

Commissioner for Railway Safety inspects the route

Long-distance trains to be diverted via Alappuzha for over a week

Commissioning of sixth platform in Ernakulam Junction after doubling work is over

KOCHI: Rail-doubling work on the 18-km-long Ernakulam Junction-Mulanthuruthy stretch would be completed by the first week of November.

This was announced after a team of officials led by the Commissioner for Railway Safety (Southern Circle), K.J.S. Naidu, inspected the tracks laid parallel to the existing one, from the morning to evening on Monday. The portion from the Ernakulam-C Cabin to the Ernakulam Town railway station would be doubled by February-March, said the Thiruvananthapuram Divisional Railway Manager Rajeev Dutt Sharma, who accompanied Mr. Naidu, along with the Chief Administrative Officer (Construction) of Southern Railway R. Ramanathan, on the doubled route in motorised trolleys.

Mr. Naidu has asked the construction wing of the Railways to rectify technical flaws and carry out the pending rail inter-linking works soon. The works on the Ernakulam South-Mulanthuruthy stretch would gain momentum from October 19. During this period, the existing signals would be deactivated and re-arranged.

Thus, long-distance trains would be diverted through Alappuzha for over a week, while passenger trains from Kayamkulam to Ernakulam would terminate their service at Kottayam, said Mr Sharma. When asked about the inordinate delay in commissioning platform six at the Ernakulam Junction station, he said that this would be done after the doubling work is over between the Ernakulam Junction and Town stations.

The revised deadline to complete the Ernakulam-Mulanthuruthy doubling work expired in March 2008. This also delayed track-doubling up to Kayamkulam, through Kottayam and Alappuzha.

The State government is yet to hand over the land required for the purpose in many places.

Meanwhile, the two apex bodies of residents associations in the district and Railway passengers associations have demanded that the Railways ensure better road connectivity to the eastern entries of the Ernakulam Junction and Town stations and open more ticket counters.

This would benefit thousands of commuters who now have to cross the congested North and South overbridges to reach the two stations. The sixth platform can now hold just over 10 coaches and needs to be lengthened.

The Railways is also yet to take over the building constructed by the GCDA on the eastern entry to the Ernakulam Junction station.

Many offices that now function in ill-maintained buildings (many of which would have to be pulled down for the Kochi metro rail) on the main entrance can be shifted to the building.

http://www.hindu.com/2009/10/10/stories/2009101056670200.htm

IMPROVED SERVICES: Divisional Railway Manager S. Subramhanyan, distributes pamphlets to passengers against carrying inflammable items and crackers in trains, during an awareness campaign, in Tiruchi Junction on Friday.

TIRUCHI: Electric locomotive hauled regular train services in the Villupuram- Tiruchi broad gauge section which has been electrified will be operated from mid November, the Divisional Railway Manager, Tiruchi S. Subramhanyan said on Friday.

With the traction sub station, established as part of the Villupuram–Tiruchi broad gauge electrification project, having been energised some residual works were being carried out by the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) prior to providing power supply.

The TNEB had erected towers to connect the Tiruchi traction sub station and stringing works were currently underway, he said adding that electric engine hauled passenger trains between Villupuram and Tiruchi would be operated from mid November.

The traction sub station work at Vriddhachalam was apace with the equipment having been installed. Mr. Subramhanyan said the 122-kilometre Villupuram – Mayiladuthurai broad gauge conversion works would be completed by the end of December.

Testing on Track had been laid in the section and signalling work and its testing were currently on.

The Closed Circuit Television System at Tiruchi junction would be commissioned before March.

A total number of 14 surveillance cameras would be installed at vantage points to scale up security at Tiruchi Junction, he added.

To another query, Mr. Subramhanyan said the Mayiladuthurai–Tiruvarur gauge conversion work had commenced with excavation work going on. “We are hoping for completion of the work of laying a new broad gauge line from Nagapattinam to Velankanni before Christmas,” he said.
