Tiruchendur gets first express train link
Boon to pilgrims bound for Tiruchendur

Good patronage from first day of opening reservation

MADURAI: A regular express train will chug out of the Tiruchendur railway station for the first time on Sunday, eight decades after railway tracks were laid there, when Union Railway Minister Lalu Prasad flags off the inaugural Tiruchendur-Chennai Egmore weekly express.

In addition to Tiruchendur the new train service will cater to a huge population of Kayalpattinam, Arumuganeri, Nazareth and Seydunganallur. Hitherto, passengers of this region had to travel either to Tirunelveli or Tuticorin to board express trains. The 62-km metre gauge section between Tirunelveli and Tiruchendur, laid in 1923, was closed for gauge conversion on December 31, 2006. On completion of the Rs. 118-crore project, the new tracks were opened for broad gauge train services in September, 2008. Three pairs of passenger train services are being operated on this section, connecting Tuticorin.

“On the very day of reservation opening on Friday, all sleeper class berths were booked and the waitlisted number crossed 150,” the official said when asked about the patronage potential for the train. The inaugural train will be flagged off at 1.45 p.m. The train will reach Egmore at 6.20 a.m. the next day.

Train no. 6736 Tiruchendur-Chennai Egmore weekly express will run on Thursdays (from February 12). It will leave Tiruchendur at 7.15 p.m. and reach Chennai at 9.20 a.m. the next day. Train no. 6735 Chennai Egmore-Tiruchendur weekly express will run on Fridays (from February 13). It will leave Egmore at 3.40 p.m. and reach Tiruchendur at 6.45 a.m. the next day.

Train service to Nagore from February 27

NAGAPATTINAM: The much awaited passenger train service on the newly laid BG track in the Tiruvarur–Nagore section would be inaugurated on February 27 by Union Minister of State for Railways R. Velu at Tiruvarur junction, said A. K. S. Vijayan, Nagapattinam MP. During the inspection of the railway line between Nagore and Nagapattinam last week, Southern Railway General Manager Mr. Rakesh Chopra had said that the track was being set right at a curve between Nagapattinam and Nagore, as suggested by the Commissioner of Railway Safety, and passenger train services would be introduced on this section as early as possible.

With the inauguration of the Tiruvarur-Nagore BG line, the Nagore-Tiruvarur-Thanjavur-Tiruchi conversion project is completed. Now, it will be easy for tourists and devotees to visit several pilgrim centres, including Velankanni Church, Nagore Dargah, Tirunallar and Sikkal and tourist spots like Tarangampadi and Point Calimere in and around Nagapattinam.

Nagore will still not have a direct rail link from Chennai as Mayiladuturai-Tiruvarur section remains metre gauge.

The Railways last year announced the extension of the Bangalore–Salem passenger train to Nagore after the completion of the BG conversion work. In the interim budget, Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav announced the extension of the Ernakulam–Tiruchi Express to Nagore

MADURAI: The second broad gauge track between Kodaikanal Road and Madurai, part of the Madurai-Dindigul track doubling project, would be thrown open for traffic by May, Southern Railway General Manager Rakesh Chopra said.

After concluding a day-long inspection of railway infrastructure between Tiruchi and Madurai here on Friday, Mr. Chopra told reporters that the project was expected to be completed by the month-end. Trains would be run on the new track, between Kodaikanal Road and Madurai, after it is cleared for traffic by the Commissioner of Railway Safety.

Of the 63-km-stretch of Dindigul-Madurai doubling project, the track between Dindigul and Kodaikanal Road for 22 km has already been put into use last year. However, Mr. Chopra said additional train services could not be introduced on the Chennai-Madurai sector since the double track between Madurai and Dindigul remained a small island in the sector. New train services would be possible only after double tracks were available between Chengalpattu and Dindigul.

During a discussion with Madurai MP, P. Mohan, the General Manager said additional berths introduced in-between the two side berths would be removed soon. The MP had sought its removal following complaints of inconvenience expressed by the passengers.

“It is the decision of the Union Railway Minister, Lalu Prasad,” Mr. Chopra said. Mr. Chopra also promised to consider the MP’s request for operating shuttle train services between Madurai and Tiruchi.

Stating that it was an annual inspection, Mr. Chopra said principal heads from the zonal railway reviewed the functioning of their respective departments in Tiruchi-Madurai sector.

The inspection was on safety aspect, condition of railway assets and the quality of services provided by the railways. They inspected railway stations, tracks, bridges, level crossings among other infrastructure. Appreciating the Madurai Railway Divisional officials for the maintenance of buildings and tracks, Mr. Chopra said signal and track failures have come down in the division.

The Division would be rewarded, he said.

The Madurai Railway Divisional Manager, Anil Singhal, and the Additional DRM, D.K. Nayak, were present.

With regard to electrification from Tiruchi to Dindigul, the official said it was progressing as per schedule and would be completed by March next year. But, main line passenger trains with electric locomotives would be operated only after the electrification is completed up to Madurai, which is expected to be completed by September next year.

A detailed estimate is being prepared for electrification between Madurai and Tuticorin/ Nagecoil and will be sent to the Railway Board for clearance. Once it is cleared, tenders will be invited. CORE wants to finalise the contractors before March next year, the official added.
