Safety inspection by Commissioner of Railway Safety soon
CHENNAI: As many as five gauge conversion works are nearing
completion and safety inspection of these lines by the Commissioner
of Railway Safety (CRS) is likely soon.
Southern Railway has written to the CRS, Bangalore, seeking his dates
for inspection of the Karaikudiâ€"Manamadurai BG section. The
inspection is likely by the first week of June.
After his mandatory clearance, the line will be opened for passenger
traffic.
The Karaikudiâ€"Manamdurai section (61 km) is part of the Tiruchi-
Manamadurai-Rameswaram BG conversion project. Once opened for
traffic, direct services can be introduced to Rameswaram from Chennai
Egmore via Tiruchi, Sivaganga, Karaikudi and Manamdaurai.
At present trains to Rameswaram from Egmore are taking the Tiruchi,
Madurai, Manamdurai route.
Chief Administrative Officer R. Ramanathan says railway authorities
are planning to invite Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram to
inaugurate the new line.
Conversion of the Tirunelveli-Tiruchendur section (62 km) is also
over and the CRS is likely to inspect the line in the second week of
June. This section is part of the Tiruchendur-Tirunelveli
-Tenkasi-Shenkottai-Punalur-Quilon project. The Punalur-Quilon and
Tenkasi-Shenkotai sections have been completed. Gauge conversion work
is on between Punalur and Shenkottai.
In July, three more converted lines, Nagur-Tiruvarur (31 km),
Dindigul-Kodaikanal Road (22 km) and Katapdi-Vellore (10 km) sections
will be opened for passenger traffic. All these sections are almost
over and by July the Commissioner is expected to conduct inspection.

Inspection of BG track begins
CHENNAI: Commissioner of Railway Safety K.J.S. Naidu on Monday began his three-day safety inspection of the newly laid broad gauge track from Karaikudi to Manamadurai (61 km).
Mr. Naidu, along with Southern Railway Chief Administrative Officer R. Ramanathan, inspected the stretch from Karaikudi to Panangudi in a trolley. On Tuesday, he will travel from Panankudi to Manamadurai. Speed trial will be conducted on Wednesday.
According to a Southern Railway official, the CRS on Monday inspected the newly laid track, level crossings, bridges, earthwork, newly constructed station buildings and other safety related works.

MADURAI: Speed trials, using a special train formation, will be
conducted on the broad gauge line between Karaikudi and Manamadurai on
June 18, Wednesday, between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. by the Commissioner of
Railway Safety. According to a release, the trials are to be undertaken
to assess the condition of the newly laid track. All users of railway
line should not come near the track during the trials.

Track inspection delay worries people
TIRUCHI: With the trial run on the newly laid broad gauge line between Tiruvarur and Nagore completed about three months ago by Railway officials, public and representatives of various organisations now want the mandatory inspection by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) to be done as early as possible so that the section could be opened to traffic again.
The delay is causing concern to the people in Delta districts since there is a huge movement of travellers to pilgrim towns such as Velankanni, Nagore and Tirunallar from across the country.
The section has been closed for railway traffic for the last two years following the commencement of the BG work. The BG works were completed a few months ago and a trial run of the material train was conducted on March 29. . Minister of State for Railways R. Velu had assured last year that the project would be completed by December 2007.
The people expected the Railways to resume train services at least before the annual Sandanakoodu festival at Nagore Dargah on June 15 for the benefit of a large number of devotees visiting the shrine. “We are disappointed that the railways have turned a deaf ear to all our cries to open this vital section before the Nagore festival”, lament Ahmed Ehsanullah of Nagore and P. Doraisingam of Koradachery. Railway sources said a team of its top officials inspected the new track on motor trolleys last Saturday. This has revived hopes of an early CRS inspection.

Speed trial conducted on new BG track
SIVAGANGA: Commissioner of Railway Safety K.J.S. Naidu on Wednesday conducted a speed trial on the newly laid broad gauge railway track between Karaikudi and Manamadurai.
The train, with 4 bogies, started its journey at 11 a.m. from Karaikudi and reached Manamadurai at 11.37 a.m. It took just 37 minutes to cover a distance of 61 km. The speed trial was conducted at 126 kmph, except on some stretches, particularly bridges.
Accompanied by Hemant Kumar, Divisional Railway Manager, Mr. Naidu inspected the functioning of level crossings, signals, strength of track, station buildings and others.
Though he was satisfied with the overall work, sources told The Hindu that he had not yet given clearance to open the track for regular traffic due to some problems in the functioning of level crossings. He had directed the authorities concerned to complete all pending works.
However, sources added that he would issue clearance certificate in the next few days after ascertaining the completion of all necessary works.
The inaugural function is likely to be held in the last week of June depending on the no objection certificate, which is mandatory to open the track for traffic.
Besides an inaugural special, the existing Sethu Express from Rameswaram to Chennai via Madurai will be diverted on its original route, through Manamadurai, Karaikudi and Tiruchi. There is also a plan to operate two passenger trains from Tiruchi to Rameswaram immediately after the inauguration.

Four BG lines awaiting green signal: Velu
VELLORE: Conversion work on four new broad gauge lines in Tamil Nadu — Katpadi-Vellore Cantonment, Tirunelveli-Tiruchendur, Tiruvarur-Nagoor and Ennoor-Korukkupettai — has been completed and they are ready for inspection by the Commissioner for Railway Safety (CRS), according to the Union Minister of State for Railways R. Velu.
He was talking to reporters after inaugurating an Automated Teller Machine with e-ticketing facility, installed by Indian Bank at the Katpadi railway station on Tuesday. Mr. Velu said the trains could be operated on the newly laid lines once the CRS inspected them and gave his clearance. Trains would be introduced based on the need. A broad gauge line from Karaikudi to Manamadurai will be inaugurated by Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram at a function on Wednesday, Mr. Velu said.

Chennai-Rameswaram train to run via Karaikudi, Sivaganga
MADURAI: Karaikudi-Manamadurai broad gauge section will be thrown open for passenger traffic from Wednesday, July 2.
A press release says that Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram will flag off the inaugural special train from Sivaganga to Manamadurai at 17.30 hrs in the presence of R.Velu, Union Minister of State for Railways; R. Regupathy, Union Minister of State for Environment and Forests; K.N. Nehru, Minister for Transport; and K.R. Periakaruppan, Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments. Train timings for the special train are as follows: It leaves Sivaganga at 17.30 hrs, Melakonnankulam at 17.48 hrs and reaches Manamadurai at 18.00 hrs.
New train route
6713 Chennai Egmore-Rameswaram Express and 6714 Rameswaram-Chennai Egmore Express running via Dindigul and Madurai, as a result of opening of Karaikudi-Manamadurai section on July 2, have been diverted to run via Pudukottai, Karaikudi and Sivaganga from July 2.
Timings on the diverted route from July 2: 6713 Chennai Egmore-Rameswaram Express will leave Chennai Egmore at 17 hrs, Tiruchi at 22.35 hrs, Pudukottai at 23.42 hrs, Karaikudi at 00.45 hrs, Sivaganga at 01.45 hrs, Manamadurai at 02.25 hrs to reach Rameswaram at 05.15 hrs.
6714 Rameswaram-Chennai Egmore Express will leave Rameswaram at 20.15 hrs, Manamadurai at 22.40 hrs, Sivaganga at 23.16 hrs, Karaikudi at 00.10 hrs, Pudukottai at 01.07 hrs, Tiruchi at 02.20 hrs to reach Chennai Egmore at 08.35 hrs.
Timings for 702 Madurai- Villupuram passenger have been revised. The train will leave Madurai at 01.15 hrs from July 2.

Rs.4,000 cr. spent for railway works in TN
INAUGURATION: P. Chidambaram, Finance Minister, flagging off train service between Karaikudi and Manamadurai at Sivaganga on Wednesday.
SIVAGANGA: The Indian Railways had spent Rs.4,000 crore towards various projects undertaken in Tamil Nadu during the last four years of United Progressive Alliance Government, said R. Velu, Minister of State for Railways.
Speaking at the inauguration of the newly-converted broad gauge section between Karaikudi and Manamadurai here on Wednesday, he said at the end of five years in office, the State would have got schemes worth Rs.5,332 crore. Various works to the tune of Rs.1,332 crore were being undertaken.
Mr. Velu said Bihar and Tamil Nadu had got special attention, as both States were neglected for several years. All sections of broad gauge were either completed or on the verge of completion. There would not be any metre gauge section in the State in the next two years.
Mr. Velu said the Madurai-Bodinaickanur section, which was almost abandoned for various reasons, would be brought under the broad gauge network.
Due to aggressive marketing and sincere attempts, the Indian Railways had earned profit of Rs.67,000 crore during the last four years. Chances were bright that the profit might touch Rs.1 lakh crore at the end of five years of UPA Government, he added.
Inaugurating the converted broad gauge section and flagging off train services on the route, Mr. Chidambaram said that it was because of cordial relationship between the Governments both at the State and Centre innumerable and important infrastructural projects were being taken up in the State.
If the unity continued further, several more projects could be taken up.
Mr. Chidambaram said one more train for the benefit of passengers of Sivaganga, Karaikudi and others would be operated between Rameswaram and Chennai.
Railway Minister would make announcement soon after consulting officials. Union Minister of State for Environment and Forests, S. Regupathy, Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments, K.R. Periakaruppan, and MPs, M.S.K. Bhavani Rajendran and E.M. Sudarsana Natchiappan, spoke.

NAGAPATTINAM: Railway engineers led by a chief engineer on Wednesday inspected the seven-km rail track between Nagapattinam and Nagore to study its stability.
A senior official of the Southern Railway said that it was a routine inspection after broad gauge conversion of the Tiruvarur-Nagore section. When asked about operation of train services on this section, the official said that they would send a report about the stability of the track and the Railways would then decide about running trains on this section.

Speed trial scheduled for August 9
CHENNAI: The Commissioner of Railway Safety will conduct a safety inspection of the newly converted broad gauge line between Tirunelveli and Tiruchendur from August 7 to 9.
Southern Railway Chief Administrative Officer R. Ramanathan told The#8194;Hindu here on Monday that Safety Commissioner K.J.S. Naidu would conduct trolley inspection of the 62-km line on August 7 and 8 and speed trial on August 9. After his clearance, the new BG line would be opened for passenger traffic. CRS certification was mandatory for any new line to operate passenger services.
In the second week of August, the CRS will inspect the second BG line between Dindigul and Kodaikanal Road and the Tiruvarur-Nagore (30 km) line in September.
Mr. Ramanathan said though the 10-km Katpadi-Vellore new BG line and a third line from Korukkupet to Ennore had been completed, their safety inspection was being delayed in the absence of Deputy CRS (Electrification) for inspecting the electric traction.
According to officials of the Central Organisation for Railway Electrification, the opening of the BG electrification between Villupuram and Ariyalur for goods traffic was also being delayed.

“Keep away from train track”
Speed trials to be conducted between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. today
TIRUNELVELI: The Southern Railway has appealed to the public to keep away from the newly laid Tirunelveli-Tiruchendur broad gauge as speed trials will be conducted on this section between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
In a statement, Senior Public Relations Officer, Southern Railway, Madurai, Venugopal, has said speed trials using a special train formation will be conducted on the newly converted broad gauge line between Tirunelveli and Tiruchendur section by the Commissioner of Railway Safety, Southern Circle, Bangalore on Wednesday (August 20) between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. to assess the condition of the new track.
General public, all users of railway line and those living on the premises clos to this section are requested not to go near the track during the high speed trial timings, Mr. Venugopal said.

TIRUNELVELI: A speed trial was conducted Wednesday on the newly laid broad gauge section between Tiruchendur and Tirunelveli.
Railway Safety Commissioner K.J.S. Naidu, who supervised the trial, expressed satisfaction with the quality of the work.
A special train with four coaches left Tiruchendur at 2.20 p.m. and crossed the 61-km stretch to reach Tirunelveli Junction at 3.02 p.m. “The train was run at 110 km-120 km an hour, and there was no problem at any point. We’ll send our report in 10 days to the Railway Ministry, ” Mr. Naidu said.
S. Ramanathan, Chief Administrative Officer, Southern Railways, Chennai, said the platform at Tiruchendur, which can now accommodate only 18 coaches, would be extended to handle 24 coaches.
He said the Railway Safety Commissioner would soon inspect the Nagoor-Thiruvaur, Katpadi-Vellore, Korukkupet-Chennai and Dindigul-Kodaikanal Road sections.

Doubling work
Mr. Singh said the doubling between Shoranur and Mangalore would be completed this year. Work on the Kannur-Valapattanam section and the Pallippuram-Pattambi-Karakkad section was complete and the sanction of the Commissioner of Railway Safety was awaited.
Earth work and track work were progressing in the Shoranur-Karakkad section. It was expected that all remaining works of doubling would be completed by December 31, 2008 except the work on the yard at Shoranur and the Netravati bridge at Mangalore. He said the tendering of the gauge conversion work of the Palakkad-Pollachi line was progressing and the work was expected to be started soon.

Inspection
On when the Commissioner for Railway Safety (CRS) would be inspecting the broad gauge track laid between Katpadi and Vellore Cantonment Stations, Mr. Velu said the CRS had completed the inspection of the broad gauge track between Tirunelveli and Tiruchendur.
He would be inspecting the Dindigul-Kodai Road, Tiruvarur-Nagore and Katpadi-Vellore Cantonment tracks in that order.
