CHANDIGARH: Co-relating its plans with that of preliminary preparations for upcoming prestigious Metro rail project for tricity and neighbouring areas, the Ambala Railways division has sent a detailed report to Delhi division, requesting high-tech infrastructure to upgrade the Chandigarh railway station and turn it into a world-class station.

DRM, Ambala division, HK Jaggi told The Times of India that they have prepared the report on basis of current population of Chandigarh, its development, the increased passenger load and to upgrade the city railway station by providing the latest required high-tech facilities there to lend it an ultra-modern look. ‘Senior railway officials are studying the details of our report, and would forward it to the Ministry of Railways for final approval,’ he added.

The official said the railway passenger load has witnessed an increase of at least 10% in last one year and is likely to go up further by year-end. ‘For getting the world-class status for the railway station, we must have the facility of Metro rail. The Chandigarh administration has moved quite ahead with their pland to establish metro rail in the city and its vicinity,’ Jaggi pointed out.

After the completion of the ongoing work of Chandigarh-Ludhiana rail track, the passenger load is expected to go up further. He revealed that the work of laying down electric line between Chandigarh-Morinda has already been completed. ‘Hopefully, the electric railway engines would start running on this line by year-end. With that, there won’t be any need to change the engine of the Janashatabdi,’ divulged Jaggi.
