The project is not making progress due non-to allocation of funds [beyod the
initial]:

Foundation laid: on 18 October 2008 at Senji by Shri. R. Velu, the then MOS
Railways

Route length: 77.33 km

No. of stations: 8 - Kudisaipalaiyam, Theevanur, Naattarmangalam, Senji
(Gingee),

Alampoondi, Palappadi, Kizh Pennathur and
Somasippadi.

No. of bridges: major € ’¶ 8; minor € ’¶ 82.

No. of level crossings € ’¶ 49

No. of overbridges (flyovers?): 1 (at Tiruvannamalai)

Number of subways: 4 (at Tiruvannamalai)

Land to be acquisitioned: 197 hectares

Total cost (estd.) € ’¶Rs. 227 crores

Sanctioned initially: Rs. 10 crores

Present status:

construction of 140-metre long bridge across R. Sankarabharani and 65-metre
long bridge across R. Tondi alone in progress;

construction of 65-m long bridge across Varaha nadi has been halted
half-way; construction to be started on 50-m bridge across Thurijal aaru.

No funds sanctioned yet for acquisition of lands and construction of the
other bridges..

The Railways initially rejected the project as a losing proposition, but was
approved by the Central cabinet under the scheme for socio-economic
development of backward areas, due to the sustained pressure from Sri. Senji
Ramachandran, the then M.L.A. for Vandavasi (Vandiwash) and chairman of the
railway convention committee.

It will take another year to complete work on the four bridges under
construction. No funds have been sanctioned for the construction of the
other four major bridges and for the overbridge at Tiruvannamalai.
Even if funds
are sanctioned immediately for land acquisition in connection with the
latter, it will take up to a year for the state government to appoint
necessary officials and complete the work [of land acquisition] .

Sri. Velu had said during the foundation-laying that the project would be
completed in three years.
