Metro rail on only one route Manvinder Singh, TNN 30 September 2009, 11:32pm IST
LUDHIANA: Financial crunch has forced the state government to bring about an amendment in the proposal of the Metro Rail Project in the city. Initially, it mulls kicking off the service only on one city route to ensure cost cutting in the project.
According to information, the DMRC had earlier prepared a detailed project report (DPR) entailing a cost expenditure of Rs 10,000 crore for starting the Metro Rail Service in the city within stipulated time span of 4.5 years. Initially, it was proposed that it would be started on two routes from Ayaali village to Chandigarh Road and Gill village to Rahon Road Octroi post. The DPR was prepared for 28 kilometre, out of which 16 kilometre was to be constructed in an elevated manner, whereas 12 kilometre was to be constructed underground.
However, sources revealed that owing to the paucity of funds, the state government and its executing agency, Punjab Infra Structure Development Board (PIDB) had been emphasizing that the total project cost should be brought down to around Rs 7000 crore.
The matter came to light when in order to check the feasibility of starting the service in city, a team of Delhi Metro Railway Corporation (DMRC) comprising joint general manager RG Sharma and executive engineer (XEN) Sreeniwas visited the city on Wednesday.
The team along with officers of the municipal corporation (MC) inspected the route on which the metro train is proposed to be started, so as to check the feasibility of starting the service in an elevated way to ensure cost cutting. Similarly, it has also been proposed that in order to reduce the cost of the project the service would be started only on one proposed route that is Aiyaali village to Chandigarh Road.
Confirming it, the DMRC officials said that they have been asked to reduce the cost by going for the elevated metro rail project. They said they would soon revisit the city to make some necessary changes in the DPR. ?As the cost of the project is very high so the state government was mulling the idea of starting the service on only one route from Aiyaali village to Chandigarh Road,? they added.
