Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: Following the government’s decision to ban GSM handsets without genuine International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers, a programme to provide genuine IMEI numbers for such handsets at a nominal cost will be implemented till November 30.
Providing details of the Genuine IMEI Implant (GII) programme at a press meet here on Tuesday, Ashwani Budhiraja, director general, Mobile Standards Alliance India (MSAI), said that was taken up in the interest of national security by the MSAI in partnership with the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) and the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).
The IMEI number is a unique identifier for the handset and security agencies can use the number to trace the owner of the handset with the help of the MSAI and the cellular operator.
But a number of so-called “China phones” have flooded the market in recent years without genuine IMEI numbers. Send SMS
Consumers can find the 15-digit IMEI number on their phone by typing *#06#.
To verify if their phone has a genuine IMEI number, they can send an SMS with “IMEI <15-digit number>” to 53232. GII programme
If the reply states that the number is not genuine, consumers can implant a genuine IMEI number under the GII programme by contacting their mobile operator. The cost for the implanting would be Rs. 199 per phone.
Mr. Budhiraja said that after November 30 this year all phones without genuine IMEI numbers would cease to function under any network.
To facilitate easy access for consumers, he said nearly 1,600 centres had been opened all over the country with 110 centres in Tamil Nadu.
