Railway board's approval sought over sky bus tech
TNN 19 September 2009, 06:58am IST

MARGAO: Authorities at the Konkan Railway Corporation (KRC) Ltd have forwarded the draft memorandum of understanding (MoU) to the Railway Board to obtain its approval for signing an agreement with the Research, Development and Standard Organization (RDSO), to facilitate the certification of the sky bus technology as a safe and proven technology for it be commercially exploited --- both globally and within the country.

Senior manager, public relations of Konkan railway, Baban Ghatge, informed on Thursday that a high level team visited the RDSO office in Lucknow regarding the signing of the MoU around two weeks ago and thereafter the draft MoU was forwarded to the Railway Board. The RDSO comes under Indian Railways and is a body of technical experts having engineers from several disciplines who have the powers to stamp their approval for a technology.

Once the Konkan railway is able to obtain the certification, it would be able to commercially exploit the technology - both globally and in the country, railway sources said. Konkan railway said that once the certification is done, they would issue global expression of interest.

Earlier, the Konkan railway had received inquiries from several countries and certain parties within the country. Goa too had evinced interest in the technology when B Rajaram was the MD of the Konkan railway. Incidentally, Rajaram developed the technology and later dedicated it to the country.

But, the project failed to take off, after a staff member of the railways died in a freak accident during a trial run of the sky bus because of sudden jerking. The mishap had cast doubts on the technology.

Regional railway manager A L Prabhakar said the sky bus trial runs were being held once a month in the presence of engineers. The tracks were routinely maintained and the test runs were also being conducted as the project is very much on. Qualitatively though, the trial runs frequency would increase with the signing of the MoU and the RDSO would depute their experts to find out the suitability of the technology before stamping their approval.
