Vadodara:
On June 5, 2009, Candian transportation and aviation major Bombardier Inc.'s Indian unit will roll out the first metro car from Savli, a small town in Vadodara district. The metro car (coach) has been built for the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). This will be the first train made by a private company in India.
If all goes well, the metro rail built in Gujarat will be commissioned in Delhi in a couple of months. Bombardier is building a dedicated broad-gauge rail line at Savli unit so that the metro cars being built here can be transported via broad-gauge. The first metro is likely to be transported to Delhi by road as the broad gauge is still under construction at the Bombardier unit.
Anuj Dayal, the chief public relations officer of DMRC , said: “This will be the first metro car to be manufactured by a private player in India. It will also be the first to be a part of phase II of the metro project.”
On being asked when this metro car will be commissioned, Dayal said: “After being delivered, it will take a couple of months for the metro to be commissioned.”
Bombardier has been able to set up the unit and deliver the first metro car in a record time. “We are happy to bring world class technology to India in a record time. We will now be handing over the metro car to DMRC. It is because of them that this project was developed and finally brought to India,” said Rajeev Jyoti, MD, Bombardier India.
Chief Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated the state-of-the-art railway vehicle manufacturing facility at Savli in November 2008.
Jyoti said: “We will be rolling out the metro car on June 5 from Savli.” Bombardier has 1.4 lakh square feet land at Savli. The company plans to manufacture railway vehicles for south Asian markets from its unit in Savli.

Metro set to roll into Noida by August-end
Residents eagerly awaiting opening of the 1.3 km stretch
To connect Yamuna Bank station and Noida City Centre
NEW DELHI: Vineeta Jha, a resident of Sector 25 in Noida, is counting the days to August-end when the Delhi Metro railway will roll into the neighbourhood.
With work on the Indraprastha-Noida link close to a finish now, countless other residents of Noida are equally eagerly awaiting the opening of the stretch that will cut down the commuting time between Delhi and the suburb. The route
According to senior officials of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, the metros journey to Noida is on schedule and by the end of August the sleek coaches will make their way past Yamuna Bank, Akshardham Temple, Mayur Vihar Phase I, Mayur Vihar Extension, New Ashok Nagar, Noida Sector 15, Noida Sector 16, Noida Sector 18, Botanical Garden and Golf Course to terminate at City Centre in Noida Sector 32.
I am eagerly awaiting the Metro to start its service. I work in Connaught Place and my office is barely 50 metres from the Metro station. When the service starts to Noida, I will save a lot of time, which is wasted otherwise travelling in buses, says Ms. Jha.
Security is yet another reason why Ms. Jha and several of her colleagues are pitching for the Metro. Even in chartered buses we encounter harassment on a daily basis. Waiting at bus stops is intimidating after sundown. But the metro stations are well-lit with adequate security even at night, says Sunaina Singh, another Noida resident.
Even as the commuters are anxiously awaiting the opening of the 13.1-km link between the recently-opened Yamuna Bank station and the Noida City Centre, the DMRC is working speedily to wind up all operations.
Work is in its final stages. Finishing touches are being given to the tracks, the overhead poles and inspection of every service is being undertaken. We will soon announce the date for rolling out of the Metro to Noida, said DMRC spokesperson Anuj Dayal.
Referring to the frequency that will be maintained, considering the heavy rush of passengers that is expected to ride on the stretch, he said: The train position is easing off. We are in the process of procuring more trains and adding more coaches to the existing ones. We will have to study the rush pattern for a few days to come up with a schedule for the trains running between Yamuna Bank and Noida stations.
Mr. Dayal said initially every alternate train would leave the Yamuna Bank station for Noida. The Yamuna Bank station will serve as the point of departure for trains going to Noida and Anand Vihar.
The Noida link covering ten stations is completely elevated and is expected to add almost 53,000 more people into the Metro railway system by 2011.
A Detailed Project Report for the light rail transit system is being prepared by the DMRC on behalf of the Noida authorities, who plan to integrate the Delhi Metro with the proposed LRT, said Mr. Dayal. Special exteriors
Adequate parking facilities are available at all the stations up to New Ashok Nagar and in Noida at Botanical Garden and City Centre station.
The stations on the Noida corridor (from Noida Sector 15 to City Centre) will have a completely new and modern look. The exterior of the station is not made of the typical stone and cement material but using a special technique called ACP (Aluminium Composite Panel). This technique is mostly used in the exterior portion of shopping malls and other modern buildings to provide an aesthetic and modern look.

Metro hiring, no slowdown here 5 Jun 2009, 0457 hrs IST, Megha Suri, TNN new delhi : With the Metro's operational network scheduled to extend from 80 km to 190 km, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is going on a massive hiring spree to increase its present strength by adding 3,000 new posts. Even as Phase II gets fully operational by next year, the recruitment process has already begun.
The new posts will mainly include operational staff like station controllers, train operators and maintenance staff (engineers), required to man a total 144 Metro stations and thousands of trains as they ferry lakhs of commuters across the capital. On an average, DMRC needs about 40 persons per operational route of 1 km to run the system.
"We have started giving out advertisements to fill up 700 posts immediately. The rest of the posts will be filled up over the next one year,'' said Anuj Dayal, chief public relations officer, DMRC.
When DMRC started recruitment of operational staff in 2002, there was no expertise available on how to run a modern Metro system in India. So a group of 40 persons was sent to Hong Kong Metro on a four-month training stint. This group, the first to be trained, in turn imparted training to the next lot of staff taken in by DMRC at a school established at Shastri Park in mid-2002.
Simultaneously, an all-India recruitment exam on the pattern of UPSC was conducted to recruit new employees. Candidates were required to clear a written examination, interview, and a psychological and medical test. The examination was first held in 2002 and 1.65 lakh aspirants applied for the initial 220 vacancies.
The Metro training school at Shastri Park is also augmenting its facilities to cater to the rush of new employees. The training capacity is being doubled from 20 classrooms to more than 40 and an additional training school is under construction.

MCD told to clear INA Mkt for Metro work http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Delhi/MCD-told-to-clear-INA-Mkt-for-Metro-work/articleshow/4641582.cms
10 Jun 2009, 2322 hrs IST
NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday asked the MCD to ensure that the squatters near INA market shift their shops within a week giving way to the Metro construction there.
The court's directions came after the Delhi government filed a report before the court stating that the dispute over construction of a Metro rail station had been resolved amicably as an alternative site is being provided to roadside vendors.
Filing the report before justice J R Midha, the chief secretary of the Delhi government said that the squatters, who were opposed to construction of the entry and exit gates of a Metro station, would be given an alternative place to do their business.
"The report of the chief secretary is accepted. The petitioners (roadside vendor) are directed to shift at the alternative site proposed in the site plan filed along with the report,'' the court said, giving MCD a week's time to ensure the execution of the plan.
The court appreciated the efforts of the chief secretary for resolving the dispute by calling a meeting of managing director of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), MCD commissioner, officer on special duty and Lt Governor and advisor to the Commonwealth Games.
The court, however, was critical of the MCD for its inaction in solving the issue. "I will pass strictures against you (MCD). The project of such a national importance, that too ahead of the Commonwealth Games, has been delayed because of you,'' the court said.
The construction at the Metro station at INA Market was stalled last year following the HC order on the plea of the Patri Association that they would be rendered job-less as they would lose their shops. The court said the stay on the construction would be vacated by the evening of June 17, the day when all the squatters would be provided the alternative site for their shops.
It also allowed the DMRC to get the construction site vacated if the squatters do not leave the place by June 17. The police was asked to provide security to the MCD and the DMRC staff for smooth shifting of the traders.
The court had earlier asked the government to call a meeting of different civic agencies urgently to resolve a dispute over the construction the Metro station here ahead of next year's Commonwealth Games. The direction came on the petition of DMRC seeking vacation of the stay on the construction of the underground metro station at INA market as the deadline for next year's Commonwealth Games was approaching fast.
Acknowledging the urgency of the matter, the court had asked the chief secretary to call the meeting of senior officials on an urgent basis and try the resolve the issue amicably.

Work on Metro line to Vaishali starts
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Delhi/Work-on-Metro-line-to-Vaishali-starts/articleshow/4641580.cms
10 Jun 2009, 2253 hrs IST
GHAZIABAD: Delhi Metro Rail Corporation on Wednesday began work on the proposed rail line from Delhi's Anand Vihar to Vaishali. The officials said the work on this 2.67km line will be completed by March 31 next year, months ahead of the Commonwealth Games in the capital.
"Once the line is complete, the journey from from Vaishali to Rajiv Chowk in Connaught Place will take only 22 minutes. Revenue from ticket sales and advertisement at the stations will go to the DMRC,'' said R K Sachan, secretary of Ghaziabad Development Authority.
GDA officials said the line will cost Rs 260 crore and that the civic agency had already paid Rs 130 crore to DMRC. "We have asked DMRC to give us details of how the remaining Rs 130 will be utilized. We will arrange for the payment on this account as soon as details are filled in. There is no problem of money for the project,'' said Sachan.
The MoU between DMRC and GDA about the first phase of the Metro project in Ghaziabad was signed on March 24 last year. In April, GDA made payment of Rs 130 crore but the work was delayed.
GDA is also looking to extend the Metro network in its area and has sought approval from the state government to levy a cess on residential land to fund it.

Uses new technology in tunnelling work on soft soil
Inside the tunnel: Delhi Metro Rail Corporation workers and engineers after the final breakthrough of tunnelling on its Qutub Minar-Saket stretch in New Delhi on Wednesday.
NEW DELHI: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation on Wednesday achieved the final breakthrough in tunnelling work on the Qutub Minar-Saket stretch using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) on Phase II of its upcoming new Central Secretariat- Gurgaon line.
This is the first time that the new technology has been used on soft soil.
According to a senior DMRC official, so far NATM was used in hard rock conditions at the Chawri Bazar station and the Ridge area near Talkatora Garden.
NATM is a technology that is used for tunnelling in rocky areas. The surface is first broken with the help of controlled blasting, the pieces are then removed using machinery, and then concrete lining is done.
Tunnel construction in soft soil is very tricky as the soil has to be immediately cemented and strengthened to prevent collapse. The Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) was not used here as the distance was small and lowering the TBM near the Archaeological Survey of India-protected monument could have been difficult and very expensive, said the DMRC official.
The 185-metre NATM tunnel breakthrough achieved at the South end of the Saket metro railway station is a part of the 1.85-km Qutub Minar-Saket stretch which also covers a cut-and-cover underground tunnel of 1,020 metres and 645 metres elevated section.
Work in this area was difficult as DMRC had to divert an old 247-metre-long, six-metre-wide and five-metre-deep natural storm-water drain which was flowing over the alignment of the NATM tunnel. All precautions prescribed by the Archaeological Survey of India had to be observed as construction activity was done close to Petheora Rai Ka Kila, a historic monument situated in the vicinity of the Saket metro station, the official said.

Metro team gets surprise visitors
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Bangalore/Metro-team-gets-surprise-visitors/articleshow/4669229.cms
18 Jun 2009, 0357 hrs IST
BANGALORE: The Namma Metro team was busier than usual on Wednesday. A surprise inspection by the secretary of Union urban development ministry and BMRC chairman M Ramachandran forced the Metro team to show the progress it has made so far.
Ramachandra, who came from Delhi to look at the project, said BMRC is likely to meet the December 2010 deadline. He said the success of the first phase has encouraged engineers to plan for the second phase early on. The first phase will be extended from 32 km to 42 km.
"We're making steady progress. The elevated parts till the cricket stadium will be ready by December 2010 if contractors don't delay. Funds, work as well as attitude are on track," he maintained.
`Development takes displacement' On concerns expressed by citizens about damage to environment by the Metro Project, Ramachandran said some displacement is bound to happen because of developmental projects.
"Each city has its own characteristics. Delhi has got used to the Metro Rail mode. Bangalore is getting used to it too. For every tree that we fell, we're trying to plant one. Metro Rail planners care about the environment," Ramachandran explained.
"As society advances, people will realize that Metro Rail is the perfect mode of transport. There'll be hardly space for cars. A good thing about the Metro Rail is that it's class neutral. In Delhi, Kolkata or even London, people from all walks of life travel together," he said.
Take Metro Rail underground?
On why the Metro Project was not taken underground to avoid displacement, Ramachandra said underground Metro costs three times the elevated one.
"Keeping resources and finance in mind, the government took the decision. The railway safety commission confirmed that elevated Metro is safe. Fifteen years from now, people will look back and say we made a timely intervention," he summed up.

Delhi Metro urged to make feeder service accessible
Gaurav Vivek Bhatnagar
Disability rights group writes to Corporation MD Sreedharan complaining about the commuters problem ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
As per DMRC website, 104 such buses run on 17 different routes covering 129 km
DMRC is an exceptional model of accessible public transportation
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NEW DELHI: A disability rights group, Samarthyam, has written to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Managing Director E. Sreedharan complaining that although metro station buildings and coaches are accessible to a great extent to persons with disabilities (PwDs), their high chassis and the presence of a number of steps to board the feeder buses make them inaccessible to many.
In a letter to Dr. Sreedharan, Samarthyam executive director Anjlee Agarwal has noted that persons using mobility aids as also those with reduced mobility such as senior citizens, persons with temporary ailments, and even families with young children find boarding these feeder buses difficult.
Ms. Agarwal has therefore urged the DMRC to provide seamless journey from origin to destination to every commuter. For this we need to make the fleet of feeder service accessible. The solution is a hydraulic lift which is not very costly and can be retrofitted at the rear side of the bus, with a door opening of 900 mm. As such it would integrate PwDs into the mainstream and help promote use of public transportation system by PwDs. Noting that with its inclusive design the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is an exceptional model of accessible public transportation in Delhi and has been appreciated all across the globe, the rights groups has stated that introduction of feeder buses for passengers was an extremely appreciable step towards customer care. As per DMRC website, 104 such buses run on 17 different routes covering 129 km one way in the interiors of Delhi. It is understood these buses are owned or controlled by the DMRC, she said. Ms. Agarwal hoped that with provision of accessible features in the feeder service also the DMRC will continue to set the trend for other transport service providers to follow.

Charge your phone on the move in Delhi Metro http://mangalorean.com/news.php?newstype=local&newsid=132186
New Delhi, June 28 (IANS) The next time you realise your mobile phone has run out of battery charge and you are commuting by the Delhi Metro, don't fret -bust connect your phone to the charging points that will soon be available at stations for free.
For the convenience of its commuters, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will install 134 multiple mobile charging machines at stations by July this year in a phased manner.
"Metro commuters can charge their mobile phones at metro stations as soon as charging points at stations are ready," DMRC spokesperson Anuj Dayal said Sunday.
All major metro stations are already equipped with facilities such as bill-drop boxes, ATMs, tea and coffee vending machines, coin vending machines, eating joints, book shops and gift shops. The rent-a-cycle facility is also available at Patel Chowk, Pragati Maidan and Indraprastha metro stations.
Delhi-based Somya Enterprises is installing these machines, which will have multiple sockets to enable commuters to charge mobile phones of different brands and makes for free.
"The mobile phone charging machine will have six sockets or chargers and will be mounted on the walls in the paid area of the station," Dayal informed.
In addition, charging points will also be available for laptops and mobile phones on board the 131 new trains which are being inducted for Phase 2 of Delhi Metro.

Metro commuters caught unaware by mock terror drill
http://www.bombaynews.net/story/512636
Sunday 28th June, 2009 (IANS)
Commuters of the Delhi Metro were caught by surprise Sunday when a series of mock drills conducted at five metro sites caused rail traffic to come to a standstill for over 40 minutes.
Starting 8 a.m., the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) staged mock drills wherein scenes depicting terrorist attacks and serial bomb blasts were created simultaneously in five different metro premises, a DMRC statement said.
The exercise caught commuters by surprise and many complained that the procedures caused undue delays and angst.
'I was waiting outside the Vishwavidyalaya station for over half an hour since the station had been cordoned off. I catch a train to Central Secretariat everyday and today I got delayed for my morning shift because of the drill -they did not even bother to tell us what was going on!' Shabnam, 24, working in a media house told IANS.
'There was no information or notification in papers - we got delayed and nothing was communicated to us,' said an angry commuter at New Delhi station.
Meanwhile, DMRC spokesperson Anuj Dayal told IANS: 'Informing commuters would defeat the very purpose of the mock drill to check preparedness to tackle different situations - this was a routine drill and the situation was brought under control within 45 minutes.'
As part of the exercise, calls were also made about a 'blast' in the last coach of a train at the Dwarka metro station, on a track between Nawada and Dwarka, in the parking area and coffee shop at Yamuna Bank station and that five terrorists 'were attacking' the Kashmere Gate metro station, a DMRC spokesperson said.
Teams from Delhi Metro, Delhi Police, Civil Defence, Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Disaster Management Department and Fire Department participated in the mock drill which ended at 8.43 a.m.
During the drill, all Metro services were stopped. These were resumed soon after the conclusion of the drill.
In all, 15 mock drills have been conducted since 2005 in which mock terrorist attacks, evacuation of trains and stations, derailment and fire conditions were created.
'The National Security Guard (NSG) also observed the entire mock drill. They don't give us certificates for security but they were happy with the level of preparedness,' another metro official said.
