DMRC trains commuters for better travel experience http://news.webindia123.com/news/ar_showdetails.asp?id=904090661&cat=&n_date=20090409

New Delhi | Thursday, Apr 9 2009

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is continuing with its efforts to improve the Metro travel experience by involving regular commuters.

The DMRC has imparted training to the second batch of the Metro Citizens Forum to act as volunteers to instill better behavior, etiquette and discipline among fellow passengers.

Delhi Metro spokesman Anuj Dayal today told UNI the training-cum-orientation programme called 'Sahyog' was recently conducted at the DMRC Corporate Headquarters, during which the volunteers were given information about various important aspects of Metro operations such as customer orientation, etiquettes,co-operation with passengers, vacating seats for the elderly and ladies, ticketing procedures, boarding and de-boarding from trains, security mechanism, disaster management and cleanliness. About 100 volunteers attended the programme and were later handed over Citizens Forum badges.

The first such training programme had been held in January, when over a hundred volunteers joined the Metro Citizens Forum.

Since then, the number of volunteers has swelled to about 250 now.

Members of the Citizens Forum cut across all age and social groups such as students, doctors, retired Army officers, teachers, businessmen and elderly citizens.

The Citizens Forum initiative came as a follow up of Delhi Metro's plans to start the Value Guide Programme in association with the Foundation for Restoration of National Values (FRNV), a non-governmental social service organization. The DMRC plans to enroll more passengers as citizen volunteers in the future as about 20 lakh commuters are expected to use the Metro system by the end of 2010.

Delhi Metro raising special customer care personnel
NEW DELHI: On an image makeover spree, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation will raise a special cadre of employees who can speak both Hindi and English and will be posted at metro stations to respond effectively to inquiries and suggestions.

With the number of metro commuters constantly rising and the network set to more than double by next year, the DMRC is making efforts to upgrade its services.

“These metro personnel are called customer relations assistants (CRAs) and the first batch of 86 employees are being posted at the customer care centres of various metro stations. The DMRC has already begun the process of recruiting another 192 CRAs in the second batch as the number of metro stations will go up to 144 after completion of Phase II as against 67 at present,” said DMRC spokesperson Anuj Dayal.

The CRAs are currently being put through a rigorous eight-week training course at the Metro Training School in Shastri Park. A specialised agency will train them on customer care, including courses on communication skills, handling public complaints, behavioural management, team building and spoken English.

“Besides this, they are being trained in station management, travel rules of DMRC, automatic fare collection systems, use of elevators and escalators, first aid, fire fighting, disaster management, rescue operations and computers,” said Mr. Dayal.

Customer care centres at Metro stations are currently manned by junior station controllers. The DMRC now intends to have personnel with specialised training on customer handling at its customer care centres.

“The need for a specialised cadre of CRAs arose as the metro carries an average of 8.5 lakh daily on its operational network spanning 74.56 km. This number is expected to go up to 20 lakh when the Phase II is completed by the Commonwealth Games scheduled to be held in October next year, thus increasing the metro network to 190 km. A large number of foreign visitors, who are expected to use the metro during the Games, will also greatly benefit from the customer relations assistants,” said Mr. Dayal.

http://living.oneindia.in/automobiles/auto-news/2009/bombardier-movia-170409.html

The first vehicle in the new high-technology fleet of BOMBARDIER MOVIA metro cars, ordered by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) for its Phase II expansion, has arrived in the capital of India. In order to meet the challenging project deadlines, the first vehicle was built in an extremely short 18-month period. It was transported directly from Germany to India in an Antonov aircraft, where it was received by DMRC, Bombardier Transportation representatives and the media at Delhi International Airport.

The first MOVIA train-set will commence track tests in March while the service introduction is scheduled for the second week in June. The first 36 vehicles for DMRC will be built in Goerlitz, Germany and the following 388 cars in Savli, India, where Bombardier has recently inaugurated a modern railway vehicle manufacturing facility. With an investment valued at 33 million euros, this
greenfield facility will directly employ 750 people and indirectly generate approximately 3,000 jobs in the region.

The arrival of the first MOVIA car is a significant milestone for two major reasons; first, DMRC has ambitious targets to expand its metro service in time for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, where the environmentally friendly fleet of 424 state-of-the-art MOVIA vehicles ordered to date will play a vital role in increasing sustainable mobility; second, the project is to be carried out in the
new large-scale manufacturing plant in India, the first of its type wholly owned by a private company in the country. Present at the airport was Dr. E.Sreedharan, Managing Director, DMRC as well as Stephane Rambaud-Measson, President, Passengers Division, Kristian Mikkelsen, President, Asia, Passengers Division, and Rajeev Jyoti, President and Managing Director, India, all from Bombardier Transportation.

During the arrival of the new MOVIA vehicle, Stephane Rambaud-Measson declared, "We, at Bombardier, are very proud of delivering our high quality vehicles to Dehli Metro. I would like to gratulate the Bombardier employees located here in India as well as those from other engineering and manufacturing sites in Europe, like Goerlitz in Germany and Västerĺs in Sweden for their amazing performance and dedicated participation in this project."

Ensuring that its world-class standards and practices are maintained across the board, the workforce being recruited by Bombardier in India is receiving training and support both in Savli and in Goerlitz. In following the production India will be able to acquire all the necessary skills to duplicate the process at the Savli site where they will be involved in training their co-workers in
India. For many of them, it will be their first trip away from home and a life-changing experience where they will be learning new skills as well as adapting to a completely different culture.

Rajeev Jyoti also present said, "This moment is a truly historic one for Bombardier in India. It represents the success of our efforts here over the last 35 years, and is a sign of how much more we can achieve together with the Indian railway operators in terms of sustainable, eco-friendly mobility in the future.
We are honored to have among us today our partners in this current endeavor and representatives from the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation to share this momentous occasion with us."

Bombardier products supporting the sustainable mobility of an expanding city To counter the dramatic rise of Delhi's population from 0.6 million to 14 million people over the last years, the first line of New Delhi's Metro network opened in December 2002. Phase I consisted of 3 lines totaling 65 km with Phase II, now under construction, representing an additional 125 km. In phase II of
the expansion of Delhi Metro, the modern MOVIA high-capacity vehicles will transport an impressive 4 million passengers every day.

The high capacity MOVIA vehicles will form an integral element of these expansion plans to meet the anticipated increase in passengers and are designed to comfortably accommodate some 1,480 passengers per four car train unit. Air conditioning is included for the comfort of the passengers and driver. CCTV and open gangways ensure security and visibility throughout the train. In addition,
emergency speaker units, installed on the vehicles, will provide passengers with the opportunity to communicate directly with the driver. The safety egress door via the driver's cab also allows for easy passenger evacuation in the event of an emergency.

The vehicles incorporate BOMBARDIER MITRAC Propulsion and Control system, featuring IP technology, a sophisticated passenger information system that includes predefined messages and notification of upcoming stations as well as a digital route map highlighting journey progress. A vital differentiator is the
fact that the vehicles are designed and constructed for optimum environmental operation, entailing solutions that are part of the innovative BOMBARDIER ECO4 portfolio of technologies launched by the global rail leader last year. Such outcomes are lower energy consumption, minimal noise emissions and recyclability levels of up to 90%. Overall, the new ECO4 portfolio offers energy and
cost-efficient solutions for total train performance with the possibility of saving up to 50 percent energy.

Concluding on his remarks, Rajeev Jyoti also declared, "The touchdown of the Antonov in New Delhi heralds a new era of progress for the Indian railwayindustry, of which Bombardier is proud to be a part.."

Now Delhi Metro railway all the way to Yamuna Bank

Staff Reporter

– PHOTIO: R. V. MOORTHY

NEW ARRIVAL: Finishing touches being given to the Delhi Metro railway’s brand new station, Yamuna Bank, on Thursday.

NEW DELHI: In a week from now, residents of East Delhi and adjoining areas in the Capital will be able to board Delhi Metro trains from a brand new station: Yamuna Bank. For thousands of commuters living in the rest of the Capital, the trans-Yamuna areas will be that much more easily accessible.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation on Thursday announced that the existing Line III (Dwarka Sector 9-Indraprastha) would be extended by 2.1 km up to the Yamuna Bank station from May 2.

“Metro trains will be available from the new station from 6 in the morning to 11 at night. The frequency of the trains will be every four minutes to ten minutes depending on the rush,” said Delhi Metro spokesperson Anuj Dayal. With the opening of this new stretch, travelling by the metro will become easier for commuters residing in East Delhi areas including Patparganj, Mayur Vihar, I P Extension and Laxmi Nagar who now have to travel up to Indraprastha or Shastri Park stations for boarding the metro.

“The opening of the Yamuna Bank station will ease the pressure on Line I (Dilshad Garden-Rithala) as passengers from East Delhi can come directly to Line III at Yamuna Bank rather than having to inter-change at Kashmere Gate and Rajiv Chowk to reach Line III,” said Mr. Dayal.

“In addition, the opening of this section will enable the Delhi Metro to open the new train maintenance depot which is also located on the Yamuna Bank. The new depot is required by DMRC for commissioning and stationing of trains during the trial runs of the upcoming new Noida extension which is scheduled to start in May/June this year,” Mr. Dayal added. The DMRC has also constructed a 5,000 square metres parking bay at Yamuna Bank which can accommodate up to 400 cars.

A new metro feeder bus service will also be launched from the Yamuna Bank station to Mayur Vihar Phase III via Vikas Marg, New Patparganj Road, Mother Dairy, Mayur Vihar Phase II, Pocket C, Kalyanpuri, Kondli and Gharole with the opening of this station.

Reduce road traffic

“The opening of the new station is also likely to reduce the road traffic from the Nizamuddin Bridge and the ITO Bridge connecting East Delhi with the rest of the Capital as both these bridges are major bottleneck points in terms of traffic, especially during the peak hours,” said Mr. Dayal.

The Yamuna Bank Depot can stable about 40 trains at one time and is spread over 3.9 lakh square metres. Completed in 27 months, the depot has facilities for washing of trains, handling technical repairs and stabling the trains during the night for inspection.

“The opening of the section has been cleared by the Commissioner for Metro Railway Safety. However, there will be no formal opening ceremony or inauguration in view of the existing code of conduct for the Lok Sabha elections,” said Mr. Dayal.

http://www.business-standard.com/india/news/dmrc-to-add-extra-coaches-to-metro-trains/59365/on

New Delhi April 26, 2009, 15:18 IST

With the number of people travelling on the Metro increasing day by day, the
DMRC has decided to attach extra coaches to some of its trains to increase their
carrying capacity.

At present all the 70 Metro trains have four coaches and are running fully
packed as over 8,50,000 passengers travel everyday on the network.

To handle the rush the coaches will be added to four of the existing trains to
make them into six-coach trains.

Each additional coach can carry a maximum of 390 persons with 50 persons sitting
and 340 standing. Thus, the carrying capacity will increase by 780 per train for
the four trains in which two coaches will be added, a DMRC spokesman said.

These additional coaches will be manufactured by the Bharat Earth Movers Ltd
(BEML) in Bangalore and the first two coaches will be delivered by August.

For the first time, these modern Metro rail coaches are being made by an Indian
company entirely on their own without any collaboration with a foreign firm. The
coaches will be inducted into passenger service after converting the four-car
trains into six-car trains in the Metro maintenance depots after testing and
trial of the trains for passenger worthiness.

The DMRC can increase train lengths to eight coaches as all Delhi Metro
platforms are built with the capacity to accommodate eight-coach trains, except
for the new standard gauge lines coming up at Inderlok-Mundka, Central
Secretariat-Badarpur and the Airport Express Line which can accommodate six
coaches, the spokesman said.

Apart from this, the DMRC has already ordered another 131 train sets whose
delivery has already started to cater to the 2 million passengers who are
expected to use the Metro network, which will consist of 190 kms after the
completion of phase II of the Delhi Metro Project by 2010. The additional 131
trains will consist of 48 trains of six cars and 83 trains of four cars, he
said.

Delhi Metro rushing to beat the deadlines

With 74.5 km being covered along the three existing lines, DMRC plans to add 115 km before the Games

The first metro system where 14 tunnel boring machines are being used

Delhiites save 66 minutes daily on an average by travelling by the metro

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NEW DELHI: It takes more than just concern for the environment and the increasing fuel prices to prompt the quintessential Delhiite to leave his car behind. So when the Delhi metro railway threw in air-conditioned comfort, speedy journey and unpolluted ambience, the reasons for leaving the car behind were good and many.

Since its commencement in December 2002, the Delhi metro has become a preferred choice and a much-awaited facility. As the city rushes to meet the deadlines for its various undertakings linked to the 2010 Commonwealth Games, the one organisation that is fighting not just to meet, but to beat the deadlines is Delhi Metro Rail Corporation.

Having added 11.47 km in this past 12 months, the DMRC is rushing to add another 115 by the time the city hosts the Games.

With 74.5 km already being covered along the three existing lines that run from Shahdara-Rithala, Central Secretariat-Jehangirpuri and Dwarka-Indraprastha, the metro is all set to change the way the city travels.

“By September 2010 the metro will have covered another 115.18 km and the number of passengers will have far surpassed the current 8.50 lakh a day to reach two million,” says DMRC spokesperson Anuj Dayal.

To keep up its tradition of not missing deadlines, the DMRC says it is doing all that is required to finish ongoing projects much ahead of the Games in October 2010.

“It is the first metro system where 14 tunnel boring machines are being used. We flew in coaches from Germany because we did not want to waste time in their transportation. The coaches too are being modified to meet international standards and we will have 48 standard gauge trains running on some segments of Phase II,” he points out.

In the coming year, the contemporary mode of transport -- the metro -- can be tracked to as far as the Delhi airport; the Badarpur border, the last post before Faridabad in Haryana; and Noida in Uttar Pradesh next door to Delhi.

Journey into East

With the opening of the Yamuna Bank station in May, the metro will literally cross the bridge. Traversing over the city’s lifeline, the Yamuna, the metro will come closer to East, which stands separated from the city by a river.

This additional 2.1 km distance from Indrapastha is being hailed as a big leap by the metro to connect the city. From the Yamuna Bank the metro will diverge to Anand Vihar and Noida.

The Indraprastha-Noida corridor

Part of the mass rapid transit system Phase II project, this section is scheduled to be complete by October 2009. Covering a distance of 15.07 km with 11 stations, this line is completely elevated. “The Noida extension alone (Delhi border to Noida City Centre) is expected to add almost 53,000 more people into the metro system by 2011. Noida authorities plan to integrate the Delhi metro with the proposed light rail transit system in Noida,” said Mr. Dayal.

At a recent meeting, between the UP authorities and DMRC, a decision to expand it to Greater Noida was also reached. Spelling relief for the hundred thousand who have invested in property in the far flung township.

Yamuna Bank-Anand Vihar corridor

Scheduled to be completed by December 2009, this 6.17 km stretch with five stations pegs the daily projected traffic for 2011 at over 1.3 lakh people per day. The longest spans of Phase-II of 70 metres consecutively over the Karkardooma flyover on the busy Vikas Marg in East Delhi are part of this stretch.

“The Anand Vihar metro station will be unique as it will integrate the three transport system--the Delhi metro, Indian Railways and inter-State bus terminus. The Yamuna Bank station is an important interchange station as the Anand Vihar ISBT corridor and the Noida corridor diverge from this point,” said Mr. Dayal.

Airport Express link

The much awaited and much debated stretch that ran into rough weather with multiple authorities has finally got on track and is expected to ferry over 42,000 passengers everyday by 2010. With an October 2010 completion date, this stretch will allow baggage check in facility at New Delhi railway station and Shivaji Stadium with state-of-art stations to accommodate passengers with bags and luggage.

With trains travelling at a high speed of 135 km per hour, the journey is expected to last 18 minutes to Indira Gandhi International Airport, 24 minutes to Dwarka Sector 21.

A seven-storey parking will be developed and the first two storeys are likely to be used as check-in areas (passenger facilitation) and concourse. The parking lot is integrated with the metro station.

The CTST-Badarpur section

The section with 15 stations will have the metro cover 20.16 km from Central secretariat to Badarpur border passing through Khan Market, Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Jangpura, Lajpat Nagar, Moolchand, East of Kailash, Nehru Place, Jasola, Sarita Vihar to reach Tuglakabad.

Partly elevated and partly underground, this section saw residents living near the elevated section protest and seek judicial intervention. After a much prolonged tussle, work on the section is finally resumed and the DMRC is hopeful of meeting the September 2010 deadline.

CTST-Gurgaon section

The CTST-Qutub Minar (12.53 km) and Qutub Minar-Gurgaon (14. 47 km) stretch is expected to scheduled to be complete by June 2010. A Rs.3,720 crore project, this stretch will pass through the high security Race Course to reach the premier All-India Institute of Medical Sciences.

The Gurgaon section, which is fully elevated, will have five stations with each station 1.5 km apart.

Kirti Nagar/Inder Lok-Mundka corridor

In the far West, the metro will travel from Inderlok to Mundka, brining closer the extreme corners of the city. To be operational by March 2010, 16 stations will cover 18.5 km.

Fifteen elevated stations at Ashok Park Main, Punjabi Bagh East, Shivaji Park, Madipur, Paschim Vihar East, Paschim Vihar West, Peera Garhi, Udyog Nagar, Surajmal Stadium, Nangloi, and Mundka among others will have side platforms except Inderlok (New Inderlok) Metro station, which will have an island platform.

This corridor will be connecting to both Line-1 and Line-3 and trains on this line will run on standard gauge.

Environmental impact

And as it connects one end of the city to another, rushes out from congested parts to the far flung suburbs, the metro has managed to bring down pollution and reduce congestion on the roads.

Assessments by the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) indicate that the metro by the end of 2007 was able to take 51,330 vehicles off the road per day. The reduced consumption of petrol, diesel and other fuels was 57,858 tonnes.

“The CRRI report claimed that people in the city save 66 minutes every day on an average by travelling by the metro, which in turn resulted in a saving of Rs.725 crore,” pointed out Mr. Dayal.

To ensure the organisation does it bit for the environment and in reducing the carbon footprint, the DMRC has been conducting large-scale tree plantation drives, water harvesting at metro stations, energy conservation drives and recently proposed the use of solar energy.

Metro orders eight extra train coaches

Four of the existing 70 trains now to have six cars to meet the increasing rush of passengers

Each additional coach can carry a maximum of 390 people

The coaches being manufactured by Bharat Earth Movers Ltd

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NEW DELHI: To increase the carrying capacity of the existing trains and to meet the increasing rush of passengers, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has ordered eight additional train coaches that will be attached to some of the existing trains.

At present all the 70 trains have four coaches to cater to the 8,50,000 passengers who travel by the metro everyday. To handle the rush, the coaches will be added to four of the existing trains to make them into six car/coach trains.

“Each additional coach can carry a maximum of 390 people with 50 persons sitting and 340 standing. Thus, the carrying capacity will increase by 780 per train for the four trains in which two coaches will be added,” said DMRC spokesperson Anuj Dayal.

These additional coaches are being manufactured by Bharat Earth Movers Ltd (BEML) at their factory in Bangalore and the order for the same had recently been placed by DMRC and the first two coaches will be delivered by August 2009.

“It is for the first time that any Indian manufacturer/company will be making modern metro rail coaches entirely on their own without any collaboration with a foreign company as a joint venture. The coaches will be inducted into passenger service after converting the four car trains into six car trains in the metro maintenance depots, testing and trial of the trains for passenger worthiness,” said Mr. Dayal.

He said the DMRC can ultimately increase train lengths to eight coaches as all the Delhi metro platforms are built with the capacity to accommodate eight-coach trains, except for the new standard gauge lines coming up at Inderlok-Mundka, Central Secretariat-Badarpur and the Airport Express Line which can accommodate six coaches. The company has already ordered another 131 train sets that are currently in the process of being delivered. The DMRC expects the passenger rush to increase to two million after completion of Phase II of the Delhi metro project by 2010.The additional 131 trains will consist of 48 trains of six cars and 83 trains of four car formation.

DMRC makes deepest tunnel http://news.webindia123.com/news/ar_showdetails.asp?id=904300841&cat=&n_date=20090430

New Delhi | Thursday, Apr 30 2009

In a major engineering achievement, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation today
successfully completed construction work of its deepest ever tunnel, built below
the existing Metro tunnel at Rajiv Chowk, the central hub of the capital city.

The breakthrough achieved today marked the completion of the deepest tunnel of
the Delhi Metro, which has been built below the existing tunnel of Central
Secretariat - Vishwavidyalaya line at Rajiv Chowk, DMRC spokesperson Anuj Dyal
said.

The depth of the new tunnel, a part of the 22.7-km-long Airport Express Link, is
45 m and it is passes 20 to 25 m below the old tunnel.

The construction of the tunnel, with a length of 1,556 m, started at the New
Delhi Railway station in October last year. With today's breakthrough, about
24.3 km tunneling is now complete and only 11.7 km remains to be done for Phase
II. DMRC is using 14 TBMs for Phase-II, the most in any Asian city at one time.

New Delhi | Friday, May 1 2009

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will extend its Line 3 Dwarka Sector 9 to Indraprastha to Yamuna Bank from tomorrow. The new route will add 2.1 kilometres to the length and breadth of the Metro network. The opening of this station is likely to reduce the vehicular traffic on the Nizamuddin and ITO bridges that connect East Delhi with the rest of the city. Both these bridges are major traffic bottlenecks, especially during peak hours. The first train will chug out of Yamuna Bank at 6000 hrs and go to Dwarka via Indraprastha.
Trains will be available on the new route till 2300 hrs every day, DMRC
spokesman Anuj Dayal told UNI here today. He said the frequency will be from four to 10 minutes, approximately, depending on the peak-hour traffic requirement. The opening of the Yamuna Bank station will also ease pressure on Line-I (Dilshad Garden-Rithala) as commuters from East Delhi can directly take Line 3 from Yamuna Bank. They will not have to change trains at Kashmere Gate and Rajiv Chowk any longer, Dayal explained. The DMRC now plans to open the new train maintenance depot located at Yamuna Bank. ''New trains can be commissioned and stationed here for the trial runs for the Noida extension scheduled to start in May or June. This line will be opened to the public in October,'' he added. The depot can stable nearly 40 trains at a time and has facilities to wash them and handle technical repairs. The station has a parking area spread over 5,000 square metres, where up to 400 cars can be
accommodated. The parking will also be operational from tomorrow. A new Metro feeder bus service will start from the Yamuna Bank station to Mayur Vihar Phase-III via Vikas Marg, New Patparganj Road, Mother Dairy, Mayur Vihar Phase-II, Pocket C, Kalyanpuri, Kondli and Gharole. The DMRC has applied for permission to provide an additio
nal feeder bus service from the new station to Jheel/Rajgarh Colony via Geeta Colony,
Shiv Puri, Rashid Market, Khureji, Shakarpur, Laxmi Nagar and Vikas Marg .This route will be operational after the permits are received. One of the already existing services from Shastri Park to Vasundhara Enclave will drop passengers 0.8 km away from the station, near Akshardham.

On May 7, Metro to start 2 hrs early

NEW DELHI: On the election day May 7 Delhi Metro services will start early morning at 4am to facilitate movement of people to various polling
stations. The decision to start train services two hours early was taken after Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) received a request for this from the election commission.

Metro services on all the operational Metro lines will start at 4am. "Train operations will start early and the trains will run at a frequency of about 15 minutes till 6am, after which normal schedules will be adhered to,'' said Anuj Dayal, DMRC's chief public relations officer.

All stations will be open during the morning hours and DMRC as well as the security staff will be posted at the stations in required strength. The ticket counters will also open early to ensure people can travel using both tokens and Metro smart cards for the journey. The election commission had reportedly made a request to DMRC to start the trains early so that polling officers, who are required to report at the polling stations in the wee hours of the day, can use the network. Voters who wish to cast their vote and then head for work can also do so. Previously, Metro services were started early during the Assembly polls in November last year.

New Yamuna Bank rail complex triggers protests

Activists charge Delhi Metro Railway with brazen encroachment

NEW DELHI: As thousands of residents of East Delhi eagerly await the metro railway’s journey across the Yamuna in a week from now to connect them to the rest of the Capital, “Save Yamuna” activists have shot off a letter to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) protesting against “concretisation of the river’s floodplains.”

The brand-new Yamuna Bank metro rail complex that has come up across the grand old river and rests on its floodplains has triggered the ire of ‘Yamuna Jiye Abhiyan’ activists who have been fighting for a long time now to keep the floodplains free from construction activities.

In their letter to DMRC Managing Director E. Sreedharan, they have pointed to the Corporation’s earlier stand of not carrying out construction activities that will “inconvenience or endanger public life or lead to ecological or environmental degradation.”

The letter accuses DMRC of having “…..brazenly encroached upon vast areas of notified riverbed/floodplain on the Yamuna’s eastern bank firstly in the name of the Shastri Park metro complex and commercial development over 12 hectares and now the Yamuna Bank metro complex over 50 hectares.”

Complaining that the new Yamuna Bank depot is located within 300 metres of the river in violation of the Delhi High Court orders, the Yamuna activists have written that while on the one hand all slum clusters were removed from the riverbed in keeping with this order, the DMRC now has been allowed to construct on the floodplains.

“Strange irony”

“It is a strange irony that while on one hand the Japan Bank for International Cooperation has given a loan to the Indian government to clean the river under the Yamuna Action Plan, you are taking a loan from the same Japan Bank to pollute the river through construction of a depot and other commercial facilities in the riverbed of the same Yamuna,” states the letter.

“Black Day”

The Yamuna activists have decided to observe the opening day of the Yamuna Bank station as “Black Day” in protest against “DMRC’s continuing encroachment on the Yamuna’s floodplain in the form of the Yamuna metro complex.”

A rally will be organised starting from Satyagrah Sthal and culminating at the Yamuna Bank metro station, where a memorandum from local farmers and Yamuna activists addressed to Dr. Sreedharan will be handed over.

Delhi Metro turns 15, station at Barakhamba declared 'the best' id=905030417&cat=&n_date=20090503

New Delhi | Sunday, May 3 2009

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) today celebrated its 15th Foundation Day in an event graced by presenece of Lt Governor of Delhi Tejendra Khanna, who defined the latter as a ''24-carat gold standard organization''. Stating that DMRC was a 24 carat gold standard organ sation from its very inception as it accomplished projects ahead of deadline and within budget, he urged it to
provide guidance to other organizations on how to improve their functioning.

DMRC, which was already providing technical consultancy to other Metros, in Mr Khanna's view would do a greater service to the nation if it created a consultancy wing for assessing organizational competence of bodies in other sectors.

Secretary, Ministry of Urban Development and Chairman, DMRC, Dr M Ramachandran, said DMRC had become a trend-setter for Metros coming up in other cities and had succeeded in making public transport ''fashionable'' by providing fast,
futuristic, safe, reliable and comfortable travel. He said, at present, 430 km of Metro route was being built or were planned in various Indian cities at a total cost of Rs 85,000 crore and the Urban Development Ministry had drafted guidelines for Metro projects.

DMRC Managing Director Dr E Sreedharan said DMRC was on track to complete Phase-II by October 2010 and had already submitted a blueprint to the Delhi Government for Metro Phase-III covering 120 km. He said DMRC hoped to get clearances from the Government soon so that Phase-III could be started even before Phase-II is completed. This would help the organization utilize its
present resources such as employees and contractors.

The DMRC MD said about 37 km would be added to the Metro network by the end of
this year. The Indraprastha-Yamuna bank section will open on May 10, Yamuna
Bank-NOIDA in August, Inderlok-Mundka in September and Yamuna Bank-Anand Vihar
in December 2009.

. The station handles about 20,000 passengers everyday but remains well maintained throughout the day with best customer support.

DMRC also instituted a new award this year for best contractor with regard to safety performance. The first Safety Shield was presented to M/s Metro Tunneling Group, a joint venture of DYWIDAG, L&T, SAMSUNG, IRCON SHIMIZU.

Twenty-one other Metro employees were awarded for outstanding performance in their respective areas of work. Employees of Delhi Metro also put up a cultural
programme on the occasion.

New Delhi |Sunday, 2009 9:05:08 PM IST

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) managing director E. Sreedharan Sunday said the proposal for phase-III of construction was awaiting approval from the state government.

Sreedharan, who was speaking at the DMRC's 15th Foundation Day event held at Kamani Auditorium here, said the DMRC was “on track” for completing phase-II construction by October 2010 and had already submitted a blueprint to the Delhi government for the phase-III, covering 120 km.

“DMRC hopes to get clearances from the government soon so that phase-III can be started before phase-II is completed. This would help the organization utilize its present resources such as employees and contractors.”

According to a DMRC official, the third phase of construction, would connect the existing stations via a 'ring road' like framework.

Meanwhile construction on other stretches is also nearing completion. The
Indraprastha to Yamuna Bank section will open May 10.

Other links like Yamuna Bank to Noida is slated to open in August, while
Inderlok to Mundka and Yamuna Bank to Anand Vihar will be ready by September and December 2009 respectively.

Delhi's Lieutenant Governor Tejendra Khanna said he was impressed with DMRC's high performance and record of finishing targets before time and within cost budgets.

“DMRC would do a greater service to the nation if it created a consultancy wing for assessing organizational competence of bodies in other sectors and providing guidance on how they could become 24-carat gold organizations,”
Khanna said.

Emphasising the need for such a wing, Khanna added that he would “invite consultants to take an independent view” on the Delhi Development Authority, Delhi Police and municipal corporations - which he felt were certainly not 24-carot gold organisations.

At the function, the Barakhamba Road Metro station was declared the Best Metro Station of the existing 66 stations. Situated in the commercial hub of the city, the station sees about 20,000 passengers daily.

Rajiv Chowk Metro station's group station manager Rajesh Kumar was awarded the Metro Man of the Year (2008-09) award. Twenty-one other DMRC employees were honoured for outstanding performance in their respective areas of work.
