'Metro door was closed manually'
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Delhi/Metro_door_was_closed_manually/articles\how/4108301.cms

11 Feb 2009, 0304 hrs IST

NEW DELHI: A high-level enquiry into Friday's incident where a man's wrist got stuck in the door of a Delhi Metro train and he hung from it for a distance of 1 km has revealed that the door reopened thrice due to massive crowding, after which it was manually closed by a passenger inside the train.

The victim, Satyendra Jaiswal (22), was posted as a Commuter Facilitation Agent (CFA) at the Line 2 platform of Rajeev Chowk station where the incident took place. It involved train No 202 running between Central Secretariat and Jehangirpuri at door number DRR 4. The committee saw CCTV grabs from the platform, which reportedly show the door reopening thrice due to massive
crowding at the door. This door was particularly crowded that evening as it is located very close to the escalators.

"Metro doors are programmed to reopen three times whenever an obstruction beyond 15 mm blocks their way. After 3 attempts, the door can only be closed by pushing the door leaves physically. In this case, the door wouldn't have closed after the third attempt but the CCTV footage clearly shows some person from the crowd physically pushing the door-leaf from outside, forcing it to shut on the wrist
of the CFA. The wrist of the CFA was 26 mm in width and couldn't therefore slide out of the closed doors,'' said Anuj Dayal, DMRC's spokesperson.

Shockingly, even as some passengers pushed the Passenger Emergency Alarm inside the train to communicate to the driver, he reportedly couldn't hear anything due to all the noise and commotion. But the DMRC enquiry has given the driver a clean chit as "there was chaos in the coach and the communication from the passengers was not clear with too many passengers shouting/speaking simultaneously.''

The report concludes with the observation that Jaiswal "should have stayed away from the door during the door closing operation''. DMRC is retraining all CFAs about the same and have advised passengers to keep a safe distance from closing doors.

Based on recommendations of the committee, DMRC has enforced a slew of measures to prevent such incidents in the future which include posting a special person near the train operator cabs at crowded stations to raise a manual alarm in case of emergency. A long buzzer will also be played at platforms before trains depart to warn people. DMRC is also going to start a massive publicity campaign
to educate public about the hazards.

Delhi Metro fights against global warming
The Delhi Metro, the first railway project in the world to be registered for carbon credits by the United Nations, have received a UN certificate for preventing over 90,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere by reducing its power requirement, thus contributing to the fight against global warming.

The certification report was given by Germany-based validation organisation TUV NORD which conducted an audit on behalf of United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), a DMRC release said. The DMRC was found to have restrictesd the emission of 90,004 tonnes of carbon dioxide from 2004 to 2007 by adoption of regenerative braking systems in the Delhi Metro trains.

Under this regenerative braking process for which DMRC earned carbon credits, whenever trains on the Metro network apply brakes, three phase-traction motors installed on these trains act as generators to produce electrical energy which goes back into the Over Head Electricity (OHE) lines. The regenerated electrical energy that is supplied back to the OHE is used by other accelerating trains in the same service line, thus saving overall energy in the system as about 30 per cent of electricity requirement is reduced.

The DMRC also claims to have saved 1,12,500 megawatt hours of power by restricting and reusing power on its trains through regenerative braking, thus saving the emission of 90,004 tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere from 2004 to 2007. It is estimated that in 2008, release of 39,000 tonnes of CO2 was prevented and this figure will increase to over 100,000 tonnes per year once Phase-II of the Metro project is fully operational.

Delhi Metro gets UN certificate for preventing carbon emission
NEW DELHI: Adding yet another feather to its cap, Delhi Metro has become the first rail network in the world to get a UN certificate for preventing over 90,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere, doing its bit to fight against global warming.

The certification report, given by Germany-based validation organisation TUV NORD which conducted an audit on behalf of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change Change (UNFCCC), found that the DMRC stopped the emission of 90,004 tonnes of carbon dioxide from 2004 to 2007 by adopting regenerative braking systems in the metro trains.

“The UN certificate was given to the DMRC for preventing over 90,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere by deducing its power requirement, thus contributing to the fight against global warming,” Delhi Metro spokesperson Anuj Dayal said today.

Under regenerative braking process for which DMRC earned carbon credits, whenever trains on the Metro network apply brakes, three phase-traction motors installed on them act as generators to produce electrical energy which goes back into the Over head Electricity (OHE) lines.

The regenerated energy that is supplied back to the OHE is used by other accelerating trains in the same service line, thus saving overall energy in the system as about 30 per cent of electricity requirement is reduced.

BOMBARDIER INC.
The first MOVIA train-set will commence track tests in March while the service introduction is scheduled for the second week in June. The first 36 vehicles for DMRC will be built in Goerlitz, Germany and the following 388 cars in Savli, India, where Bombardier has recently inaugurated a modern railway vehicle manufacturing facility. With an investment valued at 33 million euros, this greenfield facility will directly employ 750 people and indirectly generate approximately 3,000 jobs in the region. The arrival of the first MOVIA car is a significant milestone for two major reasons; first, DMRC has ambitious targets to expand its metro service in time for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, where the environmentally friendly fleet of 424 state-of-the-art MOVIA vehicles ordered to date will play a vital role in increasing sustainable mobility; second, the project is to be carried out in the new, large-scale manufacturing plant in India, the first of its type wholly owned by a private company in the country. Present at the airport was Dr. E. Sreedharan, Managing Director, DMRC as well as Stephane Rambaud-Measson, President, Passengers Division, Kristian Mikkelsen, President, Asia, Passengers Division, and Rajeev Jyoti, President and Managing Director, India, all from Bombardier Transportation. During the arrival of the new MOVIA vehicle, Stephane Rambaud-Measson declared, "We, at Bombardier, are very proud of delivering our high quality vehicles to Dehli Metro. I would like to congratulate the Bombardier employees located here in India as well as those from other engineering and manufacturing sites in Europe, like Goerlitz in Germany and Vasteras in Sweden for their amazing performance and dedicated participation in this project." Ensuring that its world-class standards and practices are maintained across the board, the workforce being recruited by Bombardier in India is receiving training and support both in Savli and in Goerlitz. In following the production line process of the first 36 vehicles in Germany, the newly recruited staff in India will be able to acquire all the necessary skills to duplicate the process at the Savli site where they will be involved in training their co-workers in India. For many of them, it will be their first trip away from home and a life-changing experience where they will be learning new skills as well as adapting to a completely different culture. Rajeev Jyoti also present said, "This moment is a truly historic one for Bombardier in India. It represents the success of our efforts here over the last 35 years, and is a sign of how much more we can achieve together with the Indian railway operators in terms of sustainable, eco-friendly mobility in the future. We are honored to have among us today our partners in this current endeavor and representatives from the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation to share this momentous occasion with us." Bombardier products supporting the sustainable mobility of an expanding city To counter the dramatic rise of Delhi's population from 0.6 million to 14 million people over the last years, the first line of New Delhi's Metro network opened in December 2002. Phase I consisted of 3 lines totaling 65 km with Phase II, now under construction, representing an additional 125 km. In phase II of the expansion of Delhi Metro, the modern MOVIA high-capacity vehicles will transport an impressive 4 million passengers every day. The high capacity MOVIA vehicles will form an integral element of these expansion plans to meet the anticipated increase in passengers and are designed to comfortably accommodate some 1,480 passengers per four car train unit. Air conditioning is included for the comfort of the passengers and driver. CCTV and open gangways ensure security and visibility throughout the train. In addition, emergency speaker units, installed on the vehicles, will provide passengers with the opportunity to communicate directly with the driver. The safety egress door via the driver's cab also allows for easy passenger evacuation in the event of an emergency. The vehicles incorporate BOMBARDIER MITRAC Propulsion and Control system, featuring IP technology, a sophisticated passenger information system that includes predefined messages and notification of upcoming stations as well as a digital route map highlighting journey progress. A vital differentiator is the fact that the vehicles are designed and constructed for optimum environmental operation, entailing solutions that are part of the innovative BOMBARDIER ECO4 portfolio of technologies launched by the global rail leader last year. Such outcomes are lower energy consumption, minimal noise emissions and recyclability levels of up to 90%. Overall, the new ECO4 portfolio offers energy and cost-efficient solutions for total train performance with the possibility of saving up to 50 percent energy. Concluding on his remarks, Rajeev Jyoti also declared, "The touchdown of the Antonov in New Delhi heralds a new era of progress for the Indian railway industry, of which Bombardier is proud to be a part." NEW DELHI: It was just one ride on the Delhi Metro railway from Rohini to Patel Chowk that made media professional Sanjay Kumar abandon his car for this mode of mass transit, which was quicker and more comfortable than his hour-long drive to office.

Two years after he made the choice Mr. Kumar said he is now being forced to consider driving again, all because of increase in waiting time and passenger rush. “Earlier the waiting time used to be four to five minutes, but now it has increased considerably and on some days it is as much as 10 minutes. The coaches are always cramped with people and the metro is increasingly beginning to resemble a Blueline bus,” he complained.

Similar complaints have poured in from commuters travelling on the Dwarka and Vishwavidyalaya lines.

“Ever since the line was extended up to Jehangirpuri, the coaches are crowded and the travel has become less comfortable. Especially during peak hours, one has to brave the crowds to even set foot in the metro,” said Shalini Singh, a Delhi University student who travels from Chawri Bazar to Vishwavidylaya.

With more passengers opting to use the metro and the service being extended to more areas, commuters have been voicing concern about the quality of travel, forcing he Delhi Metro Rail Corporation to speed up the process of procuring more coaches for the existing as well as upcoming lines.

Recently, the DMRC airlifted eight coaches from Germany, an exercise which cost them a fortune, but saved them the agony of a prolonged wait for cars. And with the date for the Commonwealth Games fast approaching, the Corporation has little option but to increase the pace of arranging more trains.

According to DMRC officials, for Phase II orders have been placed for 424 broad gauge coaches and 196 standard gauge coaches. If the orders are met, the Delhi Metro will have more than 200 train sets when Phase II becomes fully operational.

This will include 48 train sets of six-car formation while the rest will be four-car formation, officials said.

The broad gauge coaches being made by Bombardier Transportation of Germany will have 37 train sets of four coaches and 46 train sets of six coaches.

“Apart from the two train sets that are being airlifted, another seven train sets of four coaches each will be manufactured in Goerlitz, Germany. These will be brought to India by sea. The rest will be built at Bombardier’s factory being set up in Savli near Vadodara (Gujarat) as part of DMRC’s transfer of technology programme,” said Delhi Metro spokesperson Anuj Dayal.

The first train to be built at the Gujarat factory is likely to be handed over to DMRC by June this year and the standard gauge coaches will have 46 train sets with four coaches each, and two train sets with six coaches.

“The first train set is being manufactured in Korea and is likely to arrive in India by sea by the end of April this year. The trains that will be brought by sea will arrive at Mumbai or Chennai ports and then will be transported by rail track to Delhi,” he said.

The Metro rail will not be a success till all the passengers are educated and respect the rules and regulations of the project in a civilised manner. Defacing of the trains by vandals must be checked severely.

SURFACE TRANSPORT in Delhi is in a state of chaos. There are more vehicles in Delhi than in any other metropolitan city and they are congesting the roads day by day. The result is long waiting time, traffic blockages and numerous road accidents. So what is the answer? Pollution has nearly pushed Mother Earth onto its deathbed. Thousands of factories and vehicles are pouring tons of pollutants
into our atmosphere every day. At this juncture, the Metro rail comes as a breath of fresh air. The Metro is providing a valuable service. Metro rail is indeed a boon for the existing traffic scenario. It would certainly provide us with a smooth, efficient and eco-friendly transport system in the Capital.

December 25, 2005, was the inaugural day of the Metro. On this day Delhi got a much-awaited gift of comfortable and dignified mode of travel -- the Metro rail.
Thousands thronged the station to enjoy a ride in the air-conditioned coaches. It is cheaper and faster than any other mode of transport. Ticketing is fully automatic. All entrances to the Metro stations are controlled through automatic flap gates.

A training school for drivers and other operating staff has been set up. The Delhi Metro has been equipped with the most modern communication and train control system.

The work of Metro rail project is being undertaken in different phases by the DMRC. The government is taking every possible step to complete the project as soon as possible. Though tight security arrangements have been made, the concerned agencies must ensure the implementation and enforcement of rules and regulations. The Metro is a technological marvel that promises an international experience of travel.

The launching of the Delhi Metro is a result of team effort, hard work and dedication of the entire Metro team and the work is still going on war-footing in many parts of Delhi. The Metro rail will not be a success till all the passengers are educated and respect the rules and regulations of the project in a civilized manner. Defacing of the trains by vandals must be

DMRC : Automated ticketing at 16 busy stations

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Cities/Automated-ticketing-at-16-busy-stations-for-now/articleshow/4320370.cms

26 Mar 2009, 2306 hrs IST

new delhi : With Delhi Metro running packed to capacity, the queues at ticket counters in Metro stations are getting longer and longer. To provide relief to passengers from these long queues Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is now installing automated ticketing machines at busy stations.

The new machines will enable commuters to insert money in exchange for tokens. People can also recharge their smart cards by tendering cash or using credit cards. To start with, 16 such machines are being installed at busy stations at a cost of Rs 20 lakh per machine. "The automated ticketing machines will be installed at Barakhamba Road, Central Secretariat and Vishwavidyalaya stations
by the end of April. In all, 16 machines have been procured,'' said a DMRC spokesperson.

Using the vending machine is simple. A commuter needs to select the destination on a touchscreen computer and insert the required amount of money into slots provided in the machine. Commuters can insert coins of Re 1, 2 and 5 denomination and notes of Rs 10, 50 and 100 value. If the cost of the token is lower than the money inserted, the machine will automatically tender change too.

Those with smart cards will be able to recharge them at the machines. For these commuters, the machine is also designed to accept payment by credit cards. Such vending machines are very popular at Metro stations abroad and the ones procured
by DMRC have been adapted to Delhi needs. "A token vending machine was installed
on a trial basis at the Rajeev Chowk metro station about two years ago and based
on commuter feedback, certain modifications were incorporated. The improved
model is now being tested at the Shastri Park metro station,'' added the
spokesperson.

The corporation also plans to install the machines at new Metro stations at
Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and Jangpura as these are going to be busy during the
Commonwealth Games. Rajeev Chowk station will also be fitted with a vending
machine soon.

The automated machines are also expected to reduce the load on the existing
ticketing system, which is totally manual at present.

Noida |Saturday, 2009 10:05:06 PM IST

A Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) contractor's office in Noida was gutted in a major fire Saturday, officials said.

Electrical short circuit was said to have caused the fire, which erupted around 6 a.m., destroying some computers, stationary and some important documents in the Sector-37 site office of Gammon India, a DMRC contracting firm.

It took two hours for four fire tenders to control the blaze, A.B. Pandey of the fire service said.

Anuj Dayal, a DMRC spokesman, said: “The fire broke out at the administrative office of our contractor's firm Gammon India, working for us. The documents gutted were some of administrative records of that firm.”

30 Mar 2009, 0216 hrs IST

NEW DELHI: In view of the expanding network, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) started its second Operations Control Centre (OCC) at its headquarters at Barakhamba Road to control and supervise train operations, monitor passenger movement and oversee the fare collection and emergency systems. The new OCC was
made operational on Sunday and has taken over control of train operations on Line 3 (Indraprastha to Dwarka Sector 9). It will also control train movement on upcoming lines of Phase II Indraprastha to Noida, Inderlok to Mundka and Central Secretariat to Badarpur when these lines open in the coming months.

The shift of operational control was done overnight as Line 3 was being controlled by the existing OCC at Shastri Park till Saturday night. The switch was made between 11 pm and 4.45 am to ensure that passenger movement on Line 3 is not disrupted even for a minute.

Metro volunteers imparted training
NEW DELHI: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation on Thursday imparted training to the second batch of the Metro Citizens Forum which will volunteer to help instil better behaviour, etiquettes and discipline among commuters.

The Forum was started recently by DMRC after continued efforts to streamline passenger movement and ensure discipline while boarding and de-boarding failed to reign in errant commuters.

Various aspects

The training-cum-orientation programme called “Sahyog” was conducted at the DMRC headquarters where volunteers were informed about various aspects of the Metro operations such as customer orientation, etiquettes, cooperation with passengers, vacating seats for the elderly and ladies, ticketing procedures, boarding and de-boarding procedure, security mechanism, disaster management and cleanliness.

About 100 volunteers attended the programme and were handed over the Metro Citizens Forum badges after the programme.

The first such training programme was held in January this year when over a hundred volunteers joined the Forum. Since then, the number of volunteers has risen to about 250, said a DMRC official, adding: “Members of the Forum cut across all age and social groups such as students, doctors, retired Army officers, teachers, businessmen and elderly citizens.”

The Forum initiative came as a follow up of the Delhi Metro’s plans to start the value guide programme in association with the Foundation for Restoration of National Values, a non-government social service organisation.

Moolchand Metro bridge to be completed in 10 months http://www.hindu.com/thehindu/holnus/004200904051451.htm

New Delhi (PTI): Designed with the help of a French firm, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is constructing a signature Metro Bridge at Moolchand crossing which will be completed in 10 months time.

The bridge, designed with the help of a French company - Systra in four months, will be at a height of 12 mtrs above the road at the Moolchand crossing.

However, the DMRC has taken special measures to ensure that the traffic movement below the bridge does not get disrupted during the construction.

Fifteen per cent of the construction of the bridge has already been completed and metro train trial runs over the bridge are expected to start in April 2010 as this section is scheduled for opening in September 2010.

This is the first extradosed bridge of the Metro, which is being constructed on the ring road and will be parallel to the existing flyover of Moolchand and is a part of the 20.16 kms long Central Secretariat-Badarpur corridor.

The DMRC adopted an extra dosed technique as per which the 167.5 metres long bridge will have three large spans with the central span being 65.5 mtrs and other two spans being 51 metres each.

The bridge has only two pillars (Piers) located on the side of the ring road to avoid hindrance to the existing traffic flow, the DMRC said in a statement.

The segments of the bridge are being precast in the casting yard and are being brought to the site where they will be put up in the night so that the traffic movement down below is not disrupted.

To provide a better aesthetic look to the bridge the supporting cables will be encased in painted tubular pipes.

About 15 MT (Metric Ton) of 15.7 mm Galvanized, Greased and PE (Polyethylene) coated stands will be used in the bridge.

The cables which will be resting on top of the pylons are being fabricated in Hong Kong and China.
