NEW DELHI: Starting next month, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation will roll out s****y new broad gauge trains fitted with state-of-the-art technology and equipped to offer comfort. Manufactured by the consortium of Bombardier Transportation, Germany, and Bombardier Transportation, India, these trains will be commissioned progressively from this October to January 2011.

With the introduction of these trains, the waiting time at stations will hopefully be reduced and so will the passenger rush inside the coaches. While two trains will be introduced in October on Line 2 (Jehangirpuri to Sushant Lok), three more will be added to the system by November on Line 3 (Dwarka Sector 21 to Anand Vihar/Noida). Alternate trains will go to Anand Vihar and Noida.

These trains, to be introduced primarily on Line 2 and Line 3, have digital route maps on each door to indicate the stations.

They have higher capacity air-conditioning units, heating and humidity control functions, sockets available in each car for charging of mobiles and laptops and four CCTV cameras in each car for enhanced security, said a DMRC official.

With the introduction of these trains, the frequency of service will be two-and-a-half minutes. The trains will also offset the current shortage on all three lines.

According to officials, the current requirement for trains on all three lines ranges from 16 to 35.

The trains have also been equipped with two rear-view cameras (one on each side of the cab) for platform view, external speakers for audio warning signal during doors opening and closing, reduced noise level inside the saloon and automatic operation of lighting in the tunnel and viaduct.

Thirty-seven trains will have four coaches and 46 will have six coaches. They will have a carrying capacity of 1,178 passengers and 1,792 passengers, respectively. They will have an in-built design feature to ensure that wrong side doors do not open during manual operation. There is a provision for wheel disc brakes that improve brakes performance and jerk control, said officials.

With a maximum operational speed of 85 km per hour, improved acceleration rate and state-of-the-art train control management system, these trains also offer facility for remote download of train data.

The first train of this bunch is likely to hit the tracks in the first week of October with the Commissioner of Railway Safety giving the nod for starting the services.

DMRC officials said the process for procuring 424 coaches from the Germany-based Bombardier is under way and 36 coaches will be built at Gorlitz in Germany, while the rest will be made at Savli in Gujarat.

The new air-conditioning system can maintain a temperature of 25 degrees Celsius inside the train when the outside temperature will be 44 degrees, the official said.

The Dwarka derailment incident was fallout of a human error

DMRC has initiated action against the erring driver and the junior engineer

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NEW DELHI: Taking a serious view of recurring mishaps involving the metro rail, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation was asked by its board of directors on Wednesday to strengthen its safety mechanisms.

Concerned over the alarming frequency of mishaps, which include two derailments in the past two months, the Board asked the Corporation to implement safety measures and ensure an end to such incidents.

We have asked them to strengthen their safety mechanism and human resource. The Dwarka derailment incident was fallout of a human error and the recent one near Yamuna Bank station too was caused by lack of attention. Although the DMRC has already initiated action against the erring driver and the junior engineer, more needs to be done to ensure such incidents are not repeated, said Union Urban Development Secretary M. Ramachandran, who is also the Chairperson of DMRC.

These accidents were avoidable, the Corporation needs to ensure that like the way they have strengthened their design mechanisms (following the Jamrudpur mishap) they need to now focus attention on their safety and security aspects. They need to be more proactive in preventing mishaps.

The DMRC also submitted to the Board the in-house report on the Dwarka derailment and apprised it that a high-level inquiry had been initiated into the recent derailment near Yamuna Bank.

Derailments

Following the derailments on August 12 and September 13, the Centre had sought a report from the DMRC about the incidents that have triggered concerns about the safety and efficiency of the metro system

Metro to get s****ier, bigger coaches
TNN 17 September 2009, 01:37am IST

NEW DELHI: In another fortnight, Delhi Metro commuters can expect relief from the "crushed dense load'' conditions in packed trains. Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), on Tuesday, got the nod from commissioner of railway safety for new trains manufactured for Phase II. Of these, 13 full train sets of four cars each have already been delivered to DMRC depots and are in the final stages of testing. These will first be put on Line 2 (Central Secretariat to Jehangirpuri) and then Line 3 (Dwarka sector 13 to Anand Vihar/Noida).

The 13 trains, which have already come, have been stabled at Khyber Pass and Yamuna Bank depots. "Of these, two trains will be added on Line 2 by October, another 3 trains to Line 3 by November. Eight trains are needed for the Noida line. All these will be four-car train sets and Delhi Metro will introduce the first six-car train set in May 2010,'' said H S Anand, Director (rolling stock), DMRC.

With Phase II of operations scheduled to start by next year, and the Metro ridership reaching an expected 2 million, the corporation had ordered 424 coaches of broad gauge from M/s Bombardier Transportation for 83 trains 37 with four-cars (coaches) and 46 with six-cars which can carry 1178 and 1792 commuters respectively in "dense load'' conditions respectively. DMRC officials maintained that they have moved from a "dense load'' to "crushed dense load'' situation on the system.

The commissioner of railways certificate is issued after a type test of the new train load is tested under extreme conditions for all parameters of passenger and system safety. It is only after this certification that the trains can be put to passenger service.

The new trains brought for Phase II have several improved features like CCTV cameras with eight-hour backup for added security, charging points in all coaches for cell phones and laptop, improved airconditioning to provide a temperature of 25 degrees Celsius even in packed conditions and even heaters for winter. The present trains only have ACs.

With the network spreading, the new trains will have external display boards indicating the final destination stations and digital route maps on each door inside train with lights to indicate the present station, route covered and final stop for all trains in different coloured lights. The noise levels in trains will be reduced and the lighting will also automatically get adjusted as the trains enter and exit tunnels during the day to save power.

To prevent instances of people getting stuck in train doors, like the past incident when a man was dragged along a moving train, two rear view cameras have been put on every train for platform view using which the driver can see the sides of the train. Every train also has speakers on the outside to provide audio warnings to passengers about doors closing.

Even mechanically, the trains have smoother braking, better acceleration and a higher maximum operational speed of 85 kmph, compared to the present 80 kmph. An insulation mat has been provided on the roof to prevent sparking and tripping caused by strings of kites. The trains also have a better Train Control Management System.

Lessons learnt? Metro's Noida link delayed for extra checks
PTI 17 September 2009, 09:03pm IST

NEW DELHI: Known for completing projects ahead of schedule, Delhi Metro will for the first time miss its deadline on the Noida corridor, thanks to the extra checks being conducted by the DMRC which is overcautious after a few mishaps in the construction of new age transport system.

The 13.1 km line from Yamuna Bank in East Delhi to Noida City Centre on the outskirts of the capital will be operational only by November, a month after the original deadline, Delhi government sources said.

The delay is on account of extra checks being conducted on the structures of corridor and strengthening of pillars and cantilevers, they said.

This will be the first time that DMRC will miss the deadline as it has completed all the earlier projects and inaugurated lines well before schedule.

The re-checking of canitlevers and pillars is being conducted in the backdrop of the July 12 Zamrudpur mishap, in which an under-construction bridge collapsed killing six people.

"DMRC is strengthening cantilevers and pillars on the Noida Line. Some pillars on the corridor had hairline cracks and they have been strengthened. Eight cantilevers are also being strengthened," an official said.

Metro line to Noida delayed further

Delhi Metro has become extra-cautious following the July 12 Jamrudpur mishap

Going over design, construction of pillars and cantilevers thoroughly

Another reason for the delay is non-availability of trains

NEW DELHI: Having long missed its June deadline to reach Noida next-door, the Delhi Metro railway looks unlikely to make it to the suburb this September and, as things stand today, even October as well. The July 12 Jamrudpur mishap has made the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation extra-cautious.

Unwilling to take a chance, the DMRC is taking a fresh look at all its constructions and aspects of operation along the Yamuna Bank-Noida stretch before it is opened to the public. According to sources, the opening of the 13.1-km line from Yamuna Bank in East Delhi to Noida City Centre has been delayed on account of checks being carried out to ensure safety of the pillars and cantilevers.

The DMRC has gone over the design and the construction thoroughly. It does not want a repeat of the Jamrudpur mishap, which left seven dead. It is ensuring that all the cantilevers along the line are sufficiently strengthened, said a source.

Another reason for the delay is non-availability of trains. Earlier this year the DMRC got two coaches airlifted from Germany. A lot of money was spent on this because the Corporation was in a hurry to meet the June deadline. However, it has not only been unable to meet the requirement of having eight to nine trains as back-up for the Noida line, it has been saddled with the additional work of rechecking what has already been built so far.

Sources say the DMRC is yet to start trial runs on the segment between New Ashok Nagar and Noida. They started the trial runs between Yamuna Bank and New Ashok Nagar, but the trials are yet to begin on the second leg. As things stand, it seems unlikely that the metro will roll out into Noida before the year-end.

DMRC officials have maintained that it is taking all precautions to ensure that even benign cracks are not left unattended. The Corporation claims that cracks found on the pillars, even though not dangerous, are being attended to. Shirish Patel and Associates had marked out eight cantilever pillars that needed re-strengthening.

With the opening of this section, Delhi Metros Line III will comprise of 42 stations and its length will increase to 47.2 km. This will also become the longest operational section of the metro railway. There are ten stations on the upcoming new 13.1-km section, of which four fall within Delhi while six are in Noida. The corridor will be a part of the existing Line III (Blue Line) of the metro system. It will connect Noida City Centre in Sector 32 with Dwarka Sector 9.

For Delhi Metro, Games are now just 114.9 km away

Atul Mathur, Hindustan Times

New Delhi, September 18, 2009

A string of accidents in the last one year has deeply dented Delhi Metros image.

Showcased as a big leap towards solving Delhis transport problems, Metro has lost some of its sheen.

It is no longer seen as a 100 per cent safe and reliable mode of public transport after two major structural collapses, two derailments and several small accidents.

Senior Metro officials accepted that the accidents gave them a setback of at least three months. Three new Metro lines Yamuna Bank to Noida, Yamuna Bank to Anand Vihar and Inderlok to Mundka that were to be opened in 2009 have got delayed.

Delhi is to host Commonwealth Games in October 2010, which will see over one lakh people, including athletes and officials from 72 participating countries, visiting the city.

Before the Games, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will be adding seven new corridors spanning 114.9 km to its existing network of 65 km on three sections, and is expected to carry almost two million (20 lakh) passengers every day.

The Metro network will also provide easy access to 10 of 11 sporting venues across the city, and will also run feeder buses for the convenience of people.

DMRC spokesperson Anuj Dayal said, despite the delay due to ongoing strengthening of almost 30 cantilever pillars, Delhi Metro would still be able to meet the deadline of September 2010.

He, however, agreed that the Metro would have to make efforts to win back the trust and confidence of people.

I would not say that people have lost confidence in the Metro system. Numbers suggest that the ridership has increased even after the accidents. But yes, we will still have to work hard to win back that trust, Dayal said.

Keeping in mind the upcoming Games and a huge rush of foreigners visiting the country, Dayal said peoples cooperation would be equally significant in making Metro a safe and comfortable transport system.

X-rayed food does not get spoilt, says Delhi Metro
http://www.hindu.com/2009/09/20/stories/2009092056350300.htm

Public awareness campaign launched

NEW DELHI: To put an end to frequent arguments between commuters and the security personnel over suspected damage to food items due to radiation from X-ray machines during security checks at metro stations, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has embarked on a new public awareness campaign.

The Corporation has started pasting labels and advertising that the food items put through the X-ray machines installed at Metro railway stations does not get spoilt. “Arguments between commuters and the security personnel had become a regular feature, sometimes even holding up passengers. After this awareness drive, we have noticed that the commuters are less reluctant to put their food through the machines,” said a spokesperson.

“We only ask them to refrain from putting water bottles inside for fear of a spill,” he said.

According to the spokesperson, complaints were received from passengers who were wary of their food being scanned through X-ray machines and getting affected by radiation. “It has been certified by the manufacturer Rapiscan Limited that the machines are harmless to all food items. To allay passenger misgivings, stickers to this effect are put up on the X-ray machines mentioning the same,”
the spokesperson said.

The DMRC has also installed an additional door frame metal detector (DFMD) at Rajiv Chowk metro station. “There are long queues at the station, especially at the entry point of the F Block gate, during evening hours. This is also the entry point that has passengers carrying the maximum luggage, so we have installed an additional DFMD there,” said the spokesperson.

Besides, he added, “The Central Industrial Security Force is now handling more frisking points, one for the women and one for the men.”

Delhi Metro gearing up for Commonwealth Games 2010

Smriti Kak Ramachandran

Sprucing up its image and teaching its staff to converse in English

The staff to be equipped to handle queries from passengers about the metro and surroundings

To be trained to deal with situations emerging out of a terror attack or even mishaps like fire

NEW DELHI: As Delhi tries hard to allay concerns over the security of players and visitors during the upcoming Commonwealth Games-2010, organisations like the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation have begun training their staff to deal with exigencies.

While the Metro is busy sprucing up its image -- teaching its staff to converse in English and put on their best behaviour -- it is also focusing on training for disaster management.

According to senior DMRC officials, the staff deputed at metro stations and on board the trains will be trained to deal with situations emerging out of a terror attack or even mishaps like fire.

There is a compilation called hot protocol that is put together by the security department of DMRC which is like a handbook for emergencies. The staff, especially in the operations department, are given this guidebook to refer to in case of any emergency, said a DMRC spokesperson.

The guidebook apart, DMRC is aggressively training its staff on the basics of first-aid, fire-fighting, red-alert and disaster management. First-aid and fire-fighting assume much importance in DMRC owing to the critical nature of the organisation functioning and infrastructure. This time we are also focusing on how to handle a situation arising out of a bomb blast or a chemical attack, the spokesperson said.

Metro Citizens Forum, a group of volunteers who help DMRC instil good behaviour and discipline among commuters, will also be at the forefront of the Commonwealth Games preparedness. The number of volunteers has increased to over 300. Workshops on disaster management and fire safety have been organised by DMRC specifically for these volunteers so that they can play a major role in ensuring commuter safety during the Commonwealth Games, the spokesperson said.

To ensure that there are no slip-ups while communicating with the visitors, DMRC is also putting its Customer Relations Assistants (CRAs) through lesson in the Queens language. We are imparting English-speaking training to the staff, particularly the CRAs who will be constantly interacting with visitors. We expect a large turnout of foreign nationals during the Games, and to ensure that their travel on the metro is smooth we are making sure that the staff are well trained, groomed and equipped, the spokesperson said.

The staff will also be equipped to handle queries from passengers about the metro, the stations and the immediate surroundings. The staff will have to remain aware about the main locations, bus routes, information about hotels, restaurants and hospitals near their respective metro stations so that they can provide all the necessary information to the visitors, the spokesperson said.

The metro will offer easy passage to the Commonwealth Games venues as it provides connectivity to 10 out of 11 venues of the Games. These include the Games Village, Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Delhi University, Thyagaraj Complex, Siri Fort Sports Complex, National Stadium, Indira Gandhi Sports Complex, Talkatora Indoor Stadium, Yamuna Sports Complex and R. K. Tennis Complex.

Three Commonwealth Games venues -- the Games Village, the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and Delhi University -- will have direct access to metro stations. The Games Village, where most athletes will reside, is adjacent to the upcoming Akshardham metro station on the Indraprastha-Noida line.

Delhi-Noida metro trains to start running by end of 2009
IANS 25 September 2009, 11:44am IST

New Delhi: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) on Friday said its Delhi-Noida section will be operational by the end of 2009.

"The metro on Yamuna Bank to Noida section is likely to start by the first week of December this year. The opening of the section depends on delivery of trains, which are likely to come by November," said E Sreedharan, managing director, DMRC

The 13.1 km elevated Yamuna Bank-Noida stretch, with 10 stations, will be an extension of the existing Dwarka Sector 9 to Yamuna Bank section. The stretch was scheduled to be opened June 2009.

DMRC Friday commissioned its new broad gauge train on the Central Secretariat-Jahangirpuri line.

Sreedharan said that DMRC's next priority will be to open the Yamuna Bank-Anand Vihar section by December or January 2010.

The DMRC has procured metro coaches from Bombardier, a German company.

"We want no anxiety to be there with regard to safety of the Delhi metro and 11 cantilever pillars in the line are undergoing strengthening and are being double checked," said Sreedharan.

"Bombardier has gathered a team of foreign experts to assess the performance of the metro coaches before delivery. Of the 83 metro coaches procured from the company, nine have already arrived and the rest will come from the company's Baroda plant in Gujarat," he said.

The much awaited Noida corridor will be the first metro rail project connecting the NCR.

Once operational, it will be the longest line (58 km) of the Delhi metro, directly connecting Dwarka Sector 9 to Noida City Centre in Sector 32.

Metro's Noida, Badarpur lines running late
TNN 25 September 2009, 12:08pm IST

NEW DELHI: For the first time in its history, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has missed a deadline for a project. Its new line to Noida will open only in the first week of December, as against the August-end deadline. Also, the Badarpur line on which the Zamrudpur collapse took place is running five months behind schedule.

DMRC managing director E Sreedharan, on Friday, said that the Noida line will be commissioned only after overcrowding on the existing lines is tackled and seven additional trains are ready for use. "The first line to be commissioned now is the 15-km Yamuna Bank-Noida stretch which will be opened at one go. We need minimum seven trains that will be available by the end of November. During this period, we will strengthen 11 cantilever pillars on the line,'' said Sreedharan.

The next on the priority list is the 7-km Yamuna Bank-Anand Vihar line which will open end of December 2009 or early January 2010, depending on the availability of trains. The Inderlok-Mundka link will be completed before that, in November 2009, after which trial runs for standard gauge trains being introduced on the system for the first time will start. This line will be opened by end of January or February 2010.

The next section to start will link other NCR township, Gurgaon, to Delhi. This line will be opened in two parts, with the elevated Qutub Minar-Gurgaon section slated to open in March 2010 and Central Secretariat-Qutub Minar part in July 2010. The civil structures are nearing completion and work on station finishing and fitments has started.

"The Central Secretariat-Badarpur line got two months behind schedule on account of the Zamrudpur accident. Now, there is a further delay of three months. DMRC hopes to make up the delay and open the line in August 2010,'' said Sreedharan.

The last line to be opened before the Commonwealth Games in October 2010 will be the Airport Express Line in September 2010. At present, civil works are almost complete and the concessionaire has started installing systems.

New trains to ease Metro rush
Megha Suri, TNN 25 September 2009, 11:54pm IST

NEW DELHI: Those using Delhi Metro for their daily commute can now heave a sigh of relief. With the first of the new lot of 83 Metro trains inducted on the underground Line 2 (Central Secretariat to Jehangirpuri) on Friday, they can expect less crowded trains now.

In another 2-3 weeks, two more new trains will be added to Line 2 after which Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will increase the number of trains on Line 3 by November. "On Friday DMRC introduced the first Phase II train into service. The new trains will be used to ease pressure on the existing lines. Subsequently, new lines will be commissioned,'' said E Sreedharan, DMRC managing director.

Once the Phase II is complete, the ridership on Mass Rapid Transit system (MRTS) is expected to touch 2.5 million commuters a day, almost 2.5 times the present ridership of about 9.5 lakh. But to cater to the growing load and tackle overcrowding, the number of trains is being increased by 3.2 times. DMRC also plans to introduce longer six-coach trains which can carry more people compared to the present four-coach ones.

As the first new train chugged from the Central Secretariat Metro station at 8.02am, with Sreedharan and other senior DMRC officials on board, the excitement was palpable. Since the exterior of the train is slightly different from the existing Phase I trains, commuters entering it from the next station at Patel Chowk were curious. "This new train looks good. The airconditioning is amazing and now I don't feel the jerks when the train stops at stations,'' said Ankita Agarwal, a BCA student and regular commuter.

On the way, the DMRC chief was shown the features of the train CCTV cameras in coaches for added safety, sockets for mobile and laptop chargers, a route display map with lights to indicate the movement of the train and an external LED board mentioning the final destination to name a few. On the way to Jehangirpuri and back, he also interacted with passengers.

Friends Shanjukta and Raspreet, both second year students of Shri Ram College of Commerce were so overawed by the new train that they decided to skip their stop at Vishwavidyaya and travelled all the way to Jehangirpuri and back for a longer ride. They were spotted by Sreedharan, who asked: "Do you know that you are in a new train today?'' The answer was in the affirmative, after which Shanjukta was quick to ask: "I stay in Sector 19, Noida and am really waiting for the Metro to start there. When will this happen?'' The Metro man assured her that the line will start by December.

DMRC has ordered for 83 broad gauge trains from M/s Bombardier Transportation, of which 14 have delivered to DMRC. The new trains are tested and commissioned at depots and testing has been completed for three trains, including the one introduced on Friday. In addition to this, DMRC has also ordered 48 standard gauge trains that will introduced on its new standard gauge lines.

Currently DMRC has 70 trains. The number will increase to 201 by 2011.

Delhi Metro's six lines get rainbow colour codes
http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/articleshow/5068867.cms

29 Sep 2009, 1820 hrs IST

NEW DELHI: Delhi Metro is set to get a splash of rainbow colours on its network -- after operating on its red, blue and yellow lines, the next three to be opened by Oct 2010 will be coded green, violet and orange lines, an official said.

"The three new lines -- Inderlok to Mundka connecting north and northwest Delhi Central Secretariat to Badarpur connecting Delhi's centre to its southern fringes, and the Airport Express Line -- will be coded as the Green Line, Violet line and Orange line respectively," a senior Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC)
official told IANS.

He said that metro systems worldwide must comply with colour codification norms.

"These colours have to be chosen to be distinct and different from one another.
Such that even illiterate commuters or others can relate to the colour instead of the names of the stations," the official said.

The Metro currently operates three popular lines connecting the northern, central, eastern and southwestern parts of Delhi in a 70-km span.

Line 1 from Dilshad Garden to Rithala is known as the red line. Central Secretariat to Jahangirpur or Line 2 is the Yellow line while the Dwarka Sector 9 to Yamuna Bank or Line 3 is called the Blue line.

With the opening of three extensions on the operational lines as well as three new lines in a phased manner by September 2010, the entire National Capital Region (NCR), including neighbouring Noida and Gurgaon, will be linked by the 120-km network.
