Rlys freight traffic rises 11.7% signalling stable core growth
11 Nov 2009, 0322 hrs IST, Nirbhay Kumar, ET Bureau

NEW DELHI: Strong industrial growth in recent months seems to have stabilised if the double-digit growth in Indian Railways’ freight traffic is any indicator. The country’s largest transporter carried 73.46 million tonnes of freight in October, up 11.7% over the 66.08 million tonnes ferried in the same month last year.

In August, industrial output showed a remarkable recovery by expanding 10.4% on the back of double-digit growth in mining, manufacturing and electricity sectors as against the 1.7% growth recorded in the same month last year. The Railways has posted a double digit growth in freight traffic for the second time in this financial year.

Railways’ earning from freight on originating basis during April-October period this fiscal increased 7.47% to Rs 32,452.79 crore. The Railways carried 501.28 million tonnes of goods during the first seven months this fiscal.
“The traffic movement increased in almost all the commodities especially iron ore, fertiliser, cement and steel during October.

We would have seen similar growth in September also but external factors such as operational disruption in South Central Railway due to flood, late monsoon and law and order problem in Jharkhand affected freight traffic,” Railway Board member (traffic) Sri Prakash told media.

Railways minister Mamata Banerjee had set a target of carrying 882 million tonnes of freight in 2009-10 ending March 31, up 49 million tonnes over the previous year. “We would carry much more than the projected traffic for the current fiscal,” Mr Prakash said. Due to the economic slowdown, Railways’ freight traffic had dropped to negative territory in October last year.

The sharp fall in commodities such as iron ore, steel and foodgrains severely impacted Railways’ earning in the second half of last fiscal. It earns nearly 65% of its revenue from freight loading. Freight traffic bounced back in April this year with loading growing by about 3.41% to 70 million tonnes.

Ferozepur Rlys lead in revenue
Nidhi Singhi , TNN 11 November 2009, 09:34pm IST
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/ludhiana/Ferozepur-Rlys-lead-in-revenue/articleshow/5220518.cms
LUDHIANA: The Ferozepur division continues topping the list of revenue earners in the Northern Railways. It has exceeded the set targets in the
category of passenger and goods earning. The railway authorities here, have also increased the speed of trains on the local routes in an endeavour to improve the punctuality of trains and facilitate commuters.

From the past three consecutive years, authorities have successfully generated revenue for the Indian Railways. In the financial year 2007-08, the authorities earned Rs 1,609 crore, while and in the year 2008-09, the figure reached Rs 1,831 crore.

In the current financial year, they have generated Rs 1,071 crore till now. Last year, till the month of October they had earned only around Rs 983 crore. However, the set target for the current financial year is Rs 2,156 crore and the authorities are optimistic of achieving the target.

This year, Railways have recorded a growth of 18% in the passenger earning, whereas last year, it was 15% and similarly in the transportation of goods there is a growth of 7%, in container loading, the growth has been recorded as 23.86%. The authorities have generated around Rs 6 crore from ticketless commuters, while the set target of income from the ticketless commuters is 9 crore, this year.

Meanwhile, railway officials have also increased the speed of trains on the short routes, a move that was much awaited by commuters travelling on these routes. Commuters lost much time in reaching their destination as there is no electrification on these routes.

The authorities have increased the speed on the Ludhiana-Ferozepur route from 80 to 95 kilometre per hour, on Lohian Khas-Ferozepur section from 80 to 95 km/hr and on Ferozepur-Bathinda route from 95-110 kilometre per hour. Also, the improvement in the timing of trains has facilitated passengers.

Divisional railway manager (DRM) Satish Chander, said they were trying to generate more income from every possible source and simultaneously also endeavoured enhancing public facilities. He informed that the speed of trains have also been increased to facilitate commuters and ultimately generate more revenue for them.

More facilities
In order to reduce the rush at the ticket windows, authorities would open new 49 janta ticket booking counters in the Ferozepur Division. Out of these, 11 would be opened in the city. Notably, 15 such counters are functional in various parts of the city. Also, the railway authorities have covered around 7 districts of Jammu and Kashmir in 120 kilometre long rail route between Kazigund and Anantnag. 6,000 commuters are availing this facility in the valley.
