Developing Secunderabad railway station into a world class facility

Hyderabad: The much-awaited plan to develop Secunderabad railway station into a world class facility appears to have been set into motion with South Central Railway (SCR) deciding to hire a consultant.
A series of meetings was convened with Railway Board authorities last month and it was decided to hire a consultant to sketch a master plan for the project including facilities to be incorporated, timeframe for completion and estimated cost.
Global tenders would be called to finalise the consultant in a month, said the SCR spokesperson.
In the last couple of years, railway authorities made several announcements on the proposal and even the Union Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee asserted the same while presenting the Budget.
Vertical development
The plan was to go for vertical development of the station, by constructing platforms on different floors. Also included were malls, restaurants and other passenger facilities like booking offices, waiting halls on different floors with each floor connected by escalators.
Since over one lakh passengers commute through Secunderabad railway station in 190 trains everyday, the project need to be developed forecasting the needs for next 100 years, the spokesperson said.
Apart from railways requirements in handling train and passenger traffic, the consultant would draft a master plan on the procedure to be adopted for the project.
“Consultants are expected to draft the plan within 300 days and based on their recommendations, the project will be executed by the successful bidders,” said the spokesperson.
The Railway Board is planning to develop 50 stations, including Tirupati railway station into world class stations. Based on recommendations to be made by consultants for Secunderabad railway station, works would be taken up at Tirupati railway station as well.
As an alternate option, authorities are already identifying land between Renigunta and Tirupati railway stations, in case if development of the existing station was found unviable, she added.
