Climate has no impact on swine flu virus: WHO PTI Share this Article · print The World Health Organisation (WHO) has said the swine flu virus is not affected by any variation in the temperature.
Citing cumulative report of swine flu cases and deaths from different nations around the globe, WHO said the H1N1 virus has infected people from several countries with varying temperatures.
As per a WHO report, more than 18 lakh laboratories have confirmed cases of the pandemic influenza and nearly 1,800 deaths registered from across 177 countries and territories around the globe.
Dr S J Habayeb, WHO representative in India, said, "H1N1 virus has no relation to weather. Swine flu cases have been heard from countries with cold and hot temperatures."
Citing an example, he said, "Swine flu cases have been equally reported from Texas, New York and California, though the temperature varies in all the three places. Texas is warmer than New York."
According to WHO, over 1.8 lakh confirmed swine flu cases have been reported across the world. Over one lakh people have tested positive for the virus in North and South America, where more than 1,500 deaths have been reported.
This has been followed by European countries with over 32,000 people testing positive for the virus and more than 50 deaths reported from all over the continent.

H1N1 shadow on Ganesh Swine flu has cast a shadow on the 116-year-old Ganesh Festival in the city, affecting the economics of the festival. With most of the sarvajanik mandals, of the 4,000 registered mandals in the city, lowering their spending by 80 per cent, the economics of allied businesses depending on them has also collapsed.
The income of small time businessmen like pandal makers and decorators is down by 50 per cent. After the H1N1 outbreak, most of the sarvajanik mandals decided to tone down the celebrations to avoid crowding. Many mandals, including Hatti Ganpati, Babu Genu, Gokhale Samrak and Shanivar Peth Mehunpura, known for huge tableau and sets even cancelled their plans to erect the sets.
“This year all the big mandals have brought down their spending to 20 per cent,” said Anand Saraf, who has done a lot of research on Ganesh festival in Pune. “Besides swine flu, inflation and recession are also major reasons for cost cutting,” he added.

The World Heath Organisation said on Friday that swine flu infections are declining in the Southern Hemisphere as its seasonal flu period comes to an end and the pandemic shifts back north.
Countries in the Northern Hemisphere that have already had one wave of swine flu should prepare for a second wave, which may be worse, the agency said.
"The H1N1 pandemic virus has rapidly established itself and is now the dominant influenza strain in most parts of the world," WHO said in a statement. "The pandemic will persist in the coming months as the virus continues to move through susceptible populations."
Flu levels remain elevated in South Africa and Bolivia and many of these cases are probably swine flu, it said. But in most of the Southern Hemisphere, flu levels have returned to normal, said WHO spokesman Gregory Hartl.
More than 2,00,000 people worldwide have caught swine flu and at least 2,185 died of it, according to WHO. The real caseload is much higher because countries are no longer reporting individual cases.
Mr. Hartl said the agency was watching flu rates in Japan, where it believes that the high season |
