http://www.expressbuzz.com/edition/story.aspx?Title=Subway+tender+procedures+completed&artid=jsWuI9FO6yk=&SectionID=9R67TMeNb/w=&MainSectionID=wIcBMLGbUJI=&SectionName=gUhH3Holuas=&SEO=
KOCHI: The railway authorities have completed all the procedures for floating tenders for constructing Maccaparambu Subway at Elamakkara. This was disclosed by the railway authorities at a meeting attended by Fisheries and Registration Minister S Sarma and Law Minister M Vijayakumar in Kochi on Wednesday.
As the construction work of the subway was getting delayed, the locals restricted the construction work of the ICTT Vallarpadom rail connectivity project, which passes through Maccaparambu.
However, after the meeting, the locals allowed resumption of the construction work. District Collector M Beena also attended the meeting.
Maccaparambu is surrounded by river in three sides and the railway line on one side. So the subway is a longstanding demand of the 350 families.
The Kochi Corporation had allotted Rs 24 lakh to the railways in 2002 for starting the construction work of the subway.

The Vallarpadam International Container Transshipment Terminal project (ICTT), which will place Kochi in the list of international maritime hubs, is fast becoming a reality. The construction work of the terminal, railway line and four lane highway are progressing.
Once completed the ICTT will meet the demand of pivotal point for consolidating and distributing regional cargo. The Dubai Ports World (DPW), which is carrying out the construction of the terminal on BOT basis, has completed 40 percent work in the first phase. “The work will be completed by November 2009, which is the scheduled period for completion," said Suresh Joseph, general manager, DPW Kochi.
The construction of railway line, which connects Vallarpadam to Edappally Railway station, is also progressing in a time-bound manner. “We have completed 55 percent of the work. If the work is not interrupted by monsoon it will be completed by November," said Kesavachandran of Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL), which is carrying out the construction of the 9-km-long railway line. April 2009 was the earlier deadline but it was revised as there was delay in land acquisition. With the support of the government the port is providing an additional road connectivity from the Vallarpadam island to NH 47.
The ICTT is being constructed in three phases with a final capacity of handling around 3 million TEU containers in a year. The first phase will have the capacity of about 1.4 million TEU per year.
However, no steps have been taken to set up the round about at Vaduthala to ease traffic congestion.

Vallarpadam project will create half a lakh jobs: VS
Title deeds of rehabilitation land handed over to families
KOCHI: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan on Monday said that completion of the first phase of the proposed Vallarpadam International Container Transhipment Terminal (ICTT) in three years would create 50,000 direct and indirect job opportunities.
Delivering the inaugural address at a function held at Moolamppilly near here on Monday to hand over title deeds of the rehabilitation land to families displaced for the road and rail connectivity of the ICTT project, Mr. Achuthanandan said the State government would do everything possible to ensure job to at least one member from each affected family in the project.
He said it is with this objective that the displaced families are being rehabilitated in the proximity of the project for which they had given up their land.
The Chief Minister’s assurance that basic amenities at the rehabilitation land would be readied in a time-bound manner was received with much jubilation by the crowd packed into the temporary pandal.
He said the terminal would be able to handle at one time four big vessels and seven to eight smaller vessels with the completion of the first phase. On the completion of the second phase, the terminal’s capacity to berth big vessels would go up to 12, he said.
Admitting that there was a delay in completing the land acquisition process for the connectivity of the project, Mr. Achuthanandan said it was not easy to acquire 48 hectares of land within a city like Ernakulam and its suburbs. This onerous task was completed by implementing a rehabilitation package that was a model to the rest of the country, he said.
He said that daily about 4,000 container lorries would pass through the road that is being laid for connecting the ICTT project, while 20 trains would roll through the rail tracks.
Mr. Achuthanandan said the ICTT project would trigger many other development projects. The State government has done everything on its part to speed up the implementation of the proposed LNG terminal.
Fisheries and Registration Minister S. Sarma presided. Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran handed over title deeds to the displaced families. Close to 150 families in Cheranalloor, Eloor and Moolamppilly received title deeds. Minister for Law and Port Affairs M. Vijayakumar handed out benefits worth Rs. 2.38 crore.
Earlier in the day, Youth Congress activists who raised slogans against the Chief Minister and tried to wave black flag for the alleged flaws in the rehabilitation were chased away by local CPI(M) activists. The police then took them into custody.
K. Chandran Pillai, MP; M.K. Purushothaman, A.M. Yousuf, MLAs; district panchayat president P.S. Shyla; District Collector M. Beena; local body members, officials of the National Highways Authority of India and Rail Vikas Nigam Limited were also present.

Longest railway bridge in Kochi Kochi (PTI): Come November and people in Kochi can take pride in their city having the longest railway bridge in the country, cutting across an island over the Vembanad lake.
The 4.62 km-long Vallarpadam bridge will beat the current record for the longest rail bridge held by the Nehru Setu Bridge near Dehri on river Sone in Bihar by more than a kilometre.
"It will be the longest bridge built in the shortest possible time of 18 months," G Kesava Chandran, Deputy General Manager, Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd. (RVNL), which is executing the works, told PTI.
The basic idea behind building this huge elevated structure, being completely funded by the Centre, was to reduce land acquisition at nearby Vaduthala, which is a very thickly populated area, he said.
The bridge is part of the nearly nine km railway link being built for Vallarpadam International Container Transshipment Terminal (ICTT).
The total cost of the Rail link for the Vallarpadam project, including the railway station and goods yard at Edappally near here was Rs 245.67 crore, but had shot up to Rs 297.10 crore due to escalation of steel prices, he said.
Chandran said 11,000 tonnes of ordinary steel, 3,000 tonnes of high tensile steel and 36,000 tonnes of cement have so far been consumed to build the 133 span bridge, which will have 133 pillars. These pillars are built on piles sunk to depths ranging between 45 to 55 metres, he said.

Vallarpadam rail bridge getting ready
ENGINEERING FEAT: The last span of the Vallarpadam rail bridge where a concrete girder will be placed on Friday.
KOCHI: The last of the pre-stressed concrete girders to complete the 4.62-km rail bridge linking Vallarpadam International Container Transshipment Terminal site to Edappally will be placed on Friday.
The placing of the girder, at Vaduthala, will complete what is to be India’s longest rail bridge and comes virtually at the end of completion of all physical work for the 8.86-km rail corridor for the Vallarpadam terminal. The new rail line runs close to the present line near the Vaduthala rail gate.
The new bridge cuts across the Vembanad Lake through the Mulavukad Island and will push the Nehru Setu Bridge near Dehri on river Sone in Bihar to the second place by more than a kilometre. Building the new bridge involved massive deployment of manpower and material. The rail line is expected to be commissioned by November and is being executed by the Rail Vikas Nigam Limited. The initial cost of building the rail link was Rs. 245 crore, the estimates having been revised later.
Work on the rail link has been fully funded by a special allocation by the Union government for the international container transhipment terminal connectivity. The project is being executed by the National Highways Authority of India.
The road project will link Vallarpadam island to National Highway No. 47 through a 17.2-km corridor beginning at Kalamassery. The project was estimated to cost Rs. 557 crore initially.
The work on the road link has not progressed as initially scheduled, forcing the authorities to push back the commissioning of the facility. It is expected that a two-lane corridor will now be ready by March next year.

Rail connectivity to Vallarpadam terminal by December http://www.hindu.com/2009/10/10/stories/2009101050850300.htm
80% of bridge built over the backwaters
The total cost of the project is Rs.300 crore
KOCHI: The 8.86-km-long railway line from the Vallarpadam International Container Transhipment Terminal to Edapally will be ready by December.
Some more earth and track work have to be completed, said deputy general manager of Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) G. Keshava Chandran, after the last pre-stressed concrete girder to complete the 4.62-km rail bridge on the route was placed at Vaduthala on Friday. He expressed satisfaction that the longest rail over-bridge in the country was completed in two years despite initial hiccups due to land acquisition delays and the fact that about 80 per cent of the bridge is built over the backwaters.
Longest
The bridge pushes the Nehru Setu bridge, near Dehri, on the Sone in Bihar to the second place by more than 1 km. Chairman of the Cochin Port Trust N.Ramachandran too was present at the function.
The Rs.150-crore bridge on the Kochi backwaters was built by AFCONS Infrastructure Ltd for the RVNL. The total project cost for the rail connectivity is Rs.300 crore. Mr Chandran spoke of how the builders imported many pieces of equipment for the speedy completion of the bridge. The RVNL has readied a contemporary railway station at Edapally, while the railway yard at Vallarpadam is getting ready.
“We could prove that such a huge and tough project could be completed on time in Kerala, despite protests over land acquisition. The works are being monitored by the Prime Minister’s Office,” Mr. Chandran said.
The bridge was built using 18,000 tonnes of steel, 50,000 tonnes of cement and is founded over piles totalling about 64,000 metres.
