anto to Sealdah, Pune will start in September
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/NEWS/City/Delhi/Duranto-to-Sealdah-Pune-will-start-in-September/articleshow/4951946.cms

31 August 2009, 04:38am IST

NEW DELHI: Railway minister Mamata Banerjee announced that the Duranto Express touted as India's first non-stop train will begin running by the middle of next month, before the festive season. "Both the New Delhi-Sealdah and New Delhi-Pune trains are ready and will begin its run by next month before Durga Puja,'' said Banerjee.

She was speaking after inaugurating the renovated Delhi Cantonment station. The station, one of the oldest in Delhi, has been remodelled keeping its heritage and the upcoming Commonwealth Games in mind. The station now has an AC VIP lounge, separate waiting rooms for male and female passengers and two new dormitories. The station will see many west-bound trains stopping here.

The minister also flagged off the first superfast parcel train called the Tej Shree parcel sewa. The first non-stop parcel train will run between Tughlakabad and Vapi in Gujarat. Two more trains to Royapuram (Chennai) and Howrah will be introduced soon. The parcels can be booked at 5% extra cost and vendors can claim compensation if the train is excessively delayed.

Among the other "gifts'' for Delhi were a train to Sadulpur near Pilani. EAhmed, minister of state for railways said that it was primarily aimed at students travelling to Pilani. S S Khurana, railway board chairman said the train will also help tourists visiting the famous fort and temples there. Later Delhi chief minister Sheila Dik**** requested the train be called Pragati
Express, a wish that was granted by Banerjee. The capital also saw the addition of another Garib Rath. The Bandra-Jaipur Garib Rath was extended to Delhi.

Banerjee announced the running of the low-cost Yuva Express from Delhi to Mumbai and the new Kanpur-New Delhi Shatabdi Express. The railway minister said that since the Palwal ladies' special has been a huge success, the railways will soon introduce similar trains to Panipat and Ghaziabad. "We have completed 70% work on our budget promises in a short period of 56 days after the announcement of
the railway budget. Continuing this trend, we will discuss with the state government and set up a cold storage unit at Sadar Bazar on railway land under the kisan vikas mission,'' said the minister.

Senior railway officials said that the preparation for the launch of Duranto is in its last phase. Once inaugurated, this train will be be quicker than the Rajdhani Express.

New Delhi September 7, 2009, 15:06 IST

Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee will flag off the first 'Duranto' non-stop train between Chennai and New Delhi on September 14 from Chennai station.

The train is expected to take 28 hours to complete its journey, about 20 minutes less than the time taken by Chennai Rajdhani, a senior Railway Ministry official said.

The new train will run twice a week and have one first AC, two second AC, three third AC and 10 sleeper class compartments, besides a pantry car.

He said a Duranto train between Sealdah and New Delhi is also likely to be flagged off before Durga Puja from Kolkata.

The Duranto trains announced for Maharashtra will be flagged off thereafter but they have to wait till the completion of the Assembly elections in the state because of the model code of conduct.

The maintenance of the Duranto rake has been outsourced on PPP mode to private players, who will be allowed to display their advertisement inside the coaches.

Explaining the unique features of this type of trains, he said these will have no stoppages in between and will have only two or three technical halts.

These trains will travel as fast as Rajdhani express and being non-stop, will take less time to cover the distance. Duranto trains will have new-age stainless steel coaches having distinct colour.

Non-stop Duronto from Chennai to Delhi likely next week
V Ayyappan, TNN 9 September 2009, 05:28am IST

CHENNAI: Chennaiites can now travel non-stop and reach Delhi almost 20 minutes earlier than a Rajdhani train after the scheduled launch of a
Duronto train between the two cities next week.

Duronto, a pet project of railway minister Mamata Banerjee, is Bengali for Turant' or fast.

It was only on July 3, during the railway budget presentation, that the train was announced but the Rail Coach Factory (RCF) at Kapurthala has managed to manufacture rakes for the Chennai-Delhi and Howrah-Delhi services that will be launched initially. Sources said the two bi-weekly services were likely to be launched on September 14 or 15.

But officials expect the Chennai-Delhi service to be launched after the Kochu Veli-Bangalore Express to be flagged off by union minister of state for railways E Ahemed from Kochu Veli on Thursday.

A 20-member team, including four engineers, has arrived from RCF to train Southern Railway technicians. A brand new 18-coach rake is going through final trials at the Basin Bridge Train Care Centre.

The train will have a different colour from all other services. Instead of changing the exterior paint, the railways decided to paste a vinyl paper, featuring multi-colour art, over the coaches. On Tuesday, workers began pasting the vinyl paper over the coaches.

"This is the first time vinyl paper is being pasted on train coaches," an official said. The train will have coaches combining Second AC and Third AC. In regular services, First AC and Second AC are combined.

The hybrid coaches on Duronto trains are made by combining the German LHB design with the Intergral Coach Factory's (ICF) bogie.

The coaches are all built to withstand speeds of up to 150 km per hour but "maximum speed will depend on the condition of the tracks also."

"We are yet to get the fare structure, the days of operation and the final date of inauguration from the ministry," said Southern Railway chief public relations officer A J Accamma. Airlines could soon face tough competition Duronto will not only reduce travel time but will also be ideal for passengers unwilling to spend Rs 3,500 to fly to Delhi.

Southern Railway chief mechanical engineer V Carmelus said "the train will have sleeper coahes and pantry car."

Of the 12 Duronto services announced, the Howrah-Mumbai, Mumbai-Ahmedabad and Delhi-Pune trains will be fully airconditioned. The other services are Delhi-Jammu Tawi, Delhi-Lucknow, Delhi-Allahabad, Sealdah-Delhi, Kolkata-Amritsar, Bhubaneswar-Delhi and Ernakulam-Delhi.

Mamata brings colour to rail
- New train Duronto makes a splash with green dominating

The Duronto Express at Sealdah station. Picture by Amit Datta

Calcutta, Sept. 18: For the first time in Indian Railways’ 150-year history, a train with many-coloured splashes rolled today.

The Sealdah-New Delhi Duronto Express, flagged off by railway minister Mamata Banerjee, has been painted in the primary colours that erupted out of its body, garlanded for the first run.

A railway official said: “The design was primarily conceived by the minister herself. Such colours have never been seen in the railways and she wanted this new train to be bright and colourful which would go along with its speed.”

Mamata has been known to paint — and write poetry — in her spare time. Duronto, which roughly means unbridled, can only be the product of a poetic mind, though it’s not known if it was conceived in a burst of creativity.

The official said all the other 13 Duronto trains that would be introduced shortly would have the same design. It cost Rs 2.5 lakh to paint the first, whose insides are decorated with traditional paintings.

“The coaches of the train have on them a work of art in primary colours denoting speed, in the middle of which is a pair of legs, coloured blue, in a running stance,” explained the official.

Mamata’s favourite green, a profusion of which is also seen in her party symbol, is the base colour on all the coaches. A close aide said: “Didi has an extraordinary sense of colour combination in all her paintings and it was the same for Duronto. Her favourite colour is green, which symbolises maa, mati, manush (mother, earth and man).”

The idea of a colourful Duronto was born around one-and-a-half months ago. “She told railway officials that the train should be non-stop, charge lower than Rajdhani and it must be very colourful,” the aide said.

During the flag-off, Mamata said: “The railways are evergreen. The Duronto Express concept is new and our thoughts are modern.”

An artist who spoke on condition of anonymity said: “Speed has been suggested through patches of colour. But to the layperson the paint-work could look like a child’s scrawls.”

That means they could be done better. But a child’s scrawls are adorable, all the same.

Eastern Railway had outsourced the painting of Duronto to an agency through a tender. “The agency prepared several designs which were sent to the Railway Board for approval. The board approved this design,” the official said.

Sources said the design was, in fact, approved by Mamata and the board then gave the green light.

The painting was digitally embossed on cast polymeric vinyl — a type of film that has good adhesive quality — by using the ultraviolet technique. It took eight days for the agency to stick the painted films on the outside of 18 coaches.

“Of the 18 coaches, 16 are being used for Duronto. We will paint 25 coaches, though 16 will be used for the train,” the railway official said.

“We have used traditional art, including Madhubani paintings, to adorn the walls inside the coaches,” he said.

As of now, only Duronto will be painted. “A decision about other trains is yet to be taken,” the official said.

Duronto, despite its name, had to stop on its inaugural run as the pantograph of the engine got entangled in a kite’s thread. Instead of its scheduled first operational stop at Dhanbad, it had to halt at Dankuni from 5.46pm to 6.17pm.

“This is a small incident and happens in all long-distance trains, including the Rajdhani Express,” Mamata said.

Just goes to show a train can be painted any colour but will still be a train.

New train connects Kolkata, New Delhi in 16 hours
18 Sep 2009, 2243 hrs IST, IANS

KOLKATA: A new superfast train service was launched Friday between Kolkata and New Delhi that will cut short the travelling time by 90 minutes and offer added amenities to passengers.

Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee flagged off the first Duronto Express - Duronto means speedy in Bengali - at the Sealdah railway station here, fulfilling the promise she made in this year's railway budget.

The train, painted with splashes of colours, will cover the 1,454 km distance between Sealdah and New Delhi 90 minutes quicker than the Rajdhani Express, as there will be no commercial stops.

While the Rajdhani Express completes the journey in 18 hours, Duronto will take 16 hours and 30 minutes.

"I think running an express train like Duronto is an achievement for all of us. We all are heading for a new world. Thus our ideas should also be modern," Banerjee said.

"We announced altogether 14 such trains in this year's railway budget and many of them are already ready. We'll gradually launch all these trains," she said.

The train will adhere to the speed limit of 110 kmph.

Another Duronto Express will be flagged off between Chennai and New Delhi next week. Other metros will also be connected in due course by the non-stop, superfast trains.

"In up direction, the train will leave Sealdah at 6.40 pm and reach New Delhi at 11.00 next morning. So the passengers of this train will be able to utilise the whole day for their work," Banerjee said.

The Sealdah-New Delhi Duronto will have one AC I-tier coach, three AC II-tier coaches, four AC III-tier coaches and five economy AC III-tier coaches besides generator cars.

The Duronto rakes comprise ICF coaches used in the Rajdhanis and Garib Raths earlier. The Garib Raths had AC III-tier coaches that could accommodate more passengers than usual.

Each Duronto coach is 24 metres long, compared to the regular coach length of 22.3 metres. The distance between coaches is less too - 460 mm instead of the regular 960 mm.

Besides safety and hygiene features like dustbins and fire extinguishers, the coaches have sleeker designs for bottle holders and switches, mobile charging points, sliding transparent doors between coaches, and LED night lamps instead of regular fluorescent lights.

The train is built of stainless steel, which is lighter, anti-corrosive and more durable than the conventional 'cotton steel'. An important safety feature is the central buffer couplers whose enhanced load capacity makes the train derailment-proof.

The fare structure, including the cost of food, will be Rs.3,295 for AC first-class, Rs.1,880 for AC two-tier, Rs.1,390 for AC three-tier and Rs.1,335 for AC three-tier economy class.

"Indian Railways is the most grassroots organisation. Thus, we've not increased the fare structure keeping in mind the interests of poor and middle-class people who travel by train," the minister said.

She also pointed out the Indian Railways was also mulling various long-term and short-term policies to improve the existing passenger amenities.

"We must develop our facilities available with the railways to facilitate women, senior citizens and physically challenged passengers," she said.

On maiden run, Duranto 50 mins late
Dwaipayan Ghosh, TNN 20 September 2009, 12:04am IST

NEW DELHI: Railway minister Mamata Banerjee's dream express Duranto touted to be the fastest non-stop train in India completed its maiden journey on Saturday. After covering more than 1,500 km, the train, which was flagged off by Banerjee from Sealdah at 5pm on Friday, arrived at New Delhi Railway Station 50 minutes late at 9.50am on Saturday.

But most passengers said they were "happy'' with the new train and claimed it could, in the long run, replace the 40-year-old Rajdhani as the numero uno express service. According to S K Mukherjee, a passenger, the journey was comfortable. "The train is comparable to the Rajdhanis. I wish this runs daily," he added.

Another passenger S Singh, however, said the food quality needs improvement. "Unlike the Rajdhanis, which have two pantry cars, this train has only one. Hence, the service sometimes became erratic and we had to wait longer for meals,'' he said.

According to officials of Eastern Railway, the train got delayed for about half-an-hour at Dankuni in West Bengal after a kite got entangled with the pantograph of the engine. But after that, the multi-coloured train made steady progress stopping only at Dhanbad, Mughalsarai and Kanpur for technical stops each lasting less than 10 minutes. "The train has a very tight schedule. If there is a little delay in its normal run, it becomes difficult to make up for the lost time in the rest of the journey,'' said a senior Indian Railways official.

Northern Railway officials claimed it was only an unscheduled run, but assured that there would be no more delays once the train begins its scheduled journey. "We had to accommodate this train on an unscheduled run. From September 21, we will have no such problem. The 2559/60 Sealdah-New Delhi Duranto will leave Sealdah on Thursdays and Sundays at 6.40pm and arrive at New Delhi the next day at 11am. The train will start from New Delhi on Fridays and Mondays at 8.05pm and reach Sealdah at 12.25pm the next day,'' said Anant Swarup, CPRO, Northern Railway.

The fully-airconditioned Duranto has 15 coaches. The fare for a 1AC ticket is Rs 3,295 compared to Rs 3,395 in Rajdhani. The 2AC ticket is priced at Rs 1,880 and 3AC at Rs 1,390. The corresponding fares in Rajdhani trains are Rs 2,030 and Rs 1,535 respectively.

The railway minister, it seems, has taken a cue from her predecessor Lalu Yadav. She is not only using Garib Rath coaches for this new train, but also introduced 3AC economy class coaches, which have three side-berths that Lalu coceptualized but later scrapped it after facing flak. The fare for this class has been fixed at Rs 1,335.

Meanwhile, a pantry car assistant suffered minor burn injuries on his face due to rising steam from a boiling kettle. "The incident took place after the train left Kanpur. He was taken to the New Delhi railway hospital for treatment,'' said A S Negi, spokesperson of Indian Railways.

The Chennai Duranto the second such train will begin its maiden journey on September 21.

Earlier, addressing the function to flag off the Chennai-Central-Hazrat Nizamuddin (Delhi) Duronto Express, Chidambaram said the government was keen on and committed to working for the development of the nation and the people.

"The government would also see to it that this development is shared equally among the people", he said.

Welcoming the launch of non-stop train, he announced that the frequency of the train would be increased to twice a week.

Southern railway general manager M S Jayanth said the train would have new design AC composite coach consisting of 24 AC 2-Tier berths and 40 AC 3-Tier berths, as an economy AC class.

He said the train will cover 2,177 km in 27 hours and 55 minutes compared to 28 hours and ten minutes by Rajdhani Express.

CHENNAI: For the first time in the history of Southern Railway, a multihued train ran on its tracks.

Duronto is an experiment with colours. Painted predominately in green with splashes of red and blue, it looks bright and colourful.

The high quality vinyl wrap was designed by Railway Minister Mamta Banerjee herself.

Duronto is not merely a beauty on the tracks. Its coach body is made of stainless steel. This reduces tare weight by 1.5 tonne, enabling the train to run at higher speeds up to 130 km per hour.

It is longer than conventional coaches and can accommodate 72 berths in AC 3-tier. The capacity of conventional coaches is just 64 berths. In the Duronto sleeper coaches, 78 berths are available, as compared to 72 in conventional sleeper coaches.

All coaches boast of auto closing vestibule doors. These doors automatically close in the event of fire and prevent it from spreading to the adjacent coaches. All cabins are provided with emergency lamps and cellphone chargers.

Giving some relief to the hygiene conscious people, a Controlled Discharge Toilet System (CDTS) has been introduced in the train. CDTS discharges human waste only when the train reaches a speed of 30 km per hour, thus keeping railway stations clean. The toilets too have autoclosing doors.

The AC coaches are provided with wide window glasses with increased height for a better view.

Passenger friendly amenities like bottle holders, magazine bags, snack tables and mirrors have been provide in the non-AC coaches as well.

Air springs in bogies instead of oil springs provide better riding comfort. The train also has superior thermal and sound insulation features. The entire train has a public address system.

An official added that the train will have 16 coaches, of which 13 coaches will be for passenger utility. Bookings of reservation will open from September 26.

Incidentally, there was a persistent demand from several quarters for the introduction of a direct train to Delhi, since Pune is not only a fast-growing city but also an important centre for defence establishments.
