Railway earning in last three years is increasing by leap & bound .Initial reaction to it was on account of increased carring capacity (cc+6)or account juggallary & may not be repeated in future but railways continue to March forward
Last year it was altime high earning & now even last 2 months ,earning is 20% higher than last yr

"The total approximate earnings of Indian Railways on originating basis during 1st April - 31st May 2008 were Rs. 13334.72 crore compared to Rs. 11125.95 crore during the same period last year, registering an increase of 19.85 per cent.
The total goods earnings have gone up from Rs. 7383.35 crore during 1st April-31st May 2007 to Rs. 9121.74 crore during 1st April-31st May 2008, an increase of 23.54 per cent.
The total passenger revenue earnings during first two months of the financial year 2008-09 were Rs. 3727.58 crore compared to Rs. 3319.96 crore during the same period last year, registering an increase of 12.28 per cent.
The revenue earnings from other coaching amounted to Rs. 357.81 crore during April-May 2008 compared to Rs. 316.63 crore during the same period last year, an increase of 13.01 per cent.
The total sundry earnings have gone up from Rs. 108.01 crore during April-May 2007 to Rs. 127.59 crore during April-May 2008, an increase of 20.36 percent.
The total approximate number of passengers booked during April-May 2008 were 1155.35 million compared to 1097.26 million during the same period last year, showing an increase of 5.29 per cent. In the suburban and non-suburban sectors, the number of passengers booked during April-May 2008 were 601.06 million and 554.29 million compared to 582.85 million and 514.41 million during the same period last year, an increase of 3.12 per cent and 7.75 per cent respectively. "

Railway revenue earnings up by 13.87 per cent during April- December 2008 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13:44 IST The total approximate earnings of Indian Railways on originating basis during 1st April – 31st December, 2008 were Rs. 57863.90 crore compared to Rs. 50813.96 crore during the same period last year, registering an increase of 13.87 per cent.
The total goods earnings have gone up from Rs. 34127.12 crore during 1st April-31st December, 2007 to Rs. 39085.22 crore during 1st April-31st December 2008, registering an increase of 14.53 per cent.
The total passenger revenue earnings during first nine months of the financial year 2008-09 were Rs. 16242.44 crore compared to Rs. 14526.36 crore during the same period last year, registering an increase of 11.81 per cent.
The revenue earnings from other coaching amounted to Rs. 1475.34 crore during April-December 2008 compared to Rs. 1385.67 crore during the same period last year, an increase of 6.47 per cent.
The total sundry earnings have gone up from Rs. 774.81 crore during April-December 2007 to Rs. 1060.90 crore during April-December 2008, showing an increase of 36.92 percent.
The total approximate number of passengers booked during April-December 2008 was 5319.87 million compared to 4990.41 million during the same period last year, showing an increase of 6.60 per cent. In the suburban and non-suburban sectors, the number of passengers booked during April-December 2008 was 2837.21 million and 2482.66 million compared to 2748.11 million and 2242.30 million during the same period last year, an increase of 3.24 per cent and 10.72 per cent respectively.

Very good to see the statistics:
But are any R&D programmes to cutdown the operational costs. I don't hear much on that area. Which will bring more ROI and savings as well.

The earning is improved both way -by carrying more traffic & reducing expenditure .Systmatic R &D in developing higher axle load vehicle ( wagons & engines) lead to less cost & more earning
simillarly staff number is systmatically controlled & redeployed .As r result ,staff number have comedown while traffic has increased in last 5 years
All these thing leads to more earning

Railway freight revenue goes up by 13.39 per cent during April-December 2008 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12:30 IST The Railways have generated Rs. 38279.23 crore of revenue earnings from freight traffic during April-December 2008 as compared to Rs. 33758.58 crore during the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of 13.39 per cent. Railways carried 606.75 million tonnes of freight traffic during April-December 2008 as compared to 572.25 million tonnes carried during the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of 6.03 per cent. The Net Tonne Kilo Metres (NTKM) went up from 367608 million during April-December 2007 to 391100 million during April-December 2008, showing an increase of 6.39 per cent.
Of the total earnings Rs. 4640.91 crore during the month of December 2008, Rs. 1867.41 crore came from transportation of 33.13 million tonnes of coal, followed by Rs. 768.03 crore from 10.85 million tonnes of iron ore for exports, steel plants and for other domestic user, Rs. 404.75 crore from 7.43 million tonnes of cement, Rs. 288.76 crore from 4.09 million tonnes of fertilizers, Rs. 275.73 crore from 3.33 million tonnes of petroleum oil and lubricant (POL), Rs. 233.57 crore from 2.57 million tonnes of foodgrains, Rs. 213.91 crore from 2.07 million tonnes of Pig iron and finished steel from steel plants and other points, Rs. 185.93 crore from 2.28 million tonnes by container service, Rs. 57.92 crore from 0.82 million tonnes of raw material for steel plants except iron ore, and Rs. 344.90 crore from 5.58 million tonnes of other goods.

Railwaymen urged to srtive for building a world class rail system -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 16:22 IST Chairman, Railway Board, Shri S.S.Khurana said that Indian Railways is now poised to defy the recessionary trend of the day by continuing its good performance during the current year as well. In his message to Railwaymen and their families after assuming the charge of office of Chairman Railway Board, Shri Khurana said that Railways’ performance during the first three quarters of the current year reflects a growth of about 13.31 per cent in freight traffic, 11.95 per cent in passenger traffic and 13.14 per cent in total earnings approximately as compared to the previous year.
Shri Khurana called upon all Railwaymen to pay special attention to some of the important areas. He said that Railways need to maintain the tempo of growth in passenger traffic and increase in the market share of good traffic during the XI Plan to ensure 1000 million tonnes of freight and carrying of 840 million passengers in the terminal year of the Plan (2011-12). During the XI Plan period, Railways expect to double its transport capacity and to further reduce the unit cost of transportation by investing in low-cost, high-return projects which has been successful in eliminating network-bottlenecks and for ensuring effective utilization of rolling stock, in the short run. Additionally, the strategy in the long run would be to enhance productivity through modernization and technological upgradation on the one hand and enhancement of capacity of the network and rolling stock on the other. Public-Private Partnerships, development of world class stations and the construction of Dedicated Freight Corridors on Eastern and Western sectors would be other areas of priority in the future. Besides, safety, security and punctuality shall continue to be priorities as they have always been, the Chairman added.
Shri Khurana urged Railwaymen to join together to strive for building a world class rail system for the nation and also work together as a team to build the Railways into an efficient, vibrant, responsive and safe system.

The total passenger revenue earnings during first ten months of the financial year 2008-09 were Rs. 18042.82 crore compared to Rs. 16134.94 crore during the same period last year, registering an increase of 11.82 per cent.
The revenue earnings from other coaching amounted to Rs. 1639.42 crore during April-January 2009 compared to Rs. 1539.31 crore during the same period last year, an increase of 6.50 per cent.
The total sundry earnings have gone up from Rs. 918.63 crore during April-January 2008 to Rs. 1177.84 crore during April-January 2009, showing an increase of 28.22 percent.
The total approximate number of passengers booked during April-January 2009 was 5917.86 million compared to 5559.89 million during the same period last year, showing an increase of 6.44 per cent. In the suburban and non-suburban sectors, the number of passengers booked during April-January 2009 was 3164.06 million and 2753.80 million compared to 3074.10 million and 2485.79 million during the same period last year, an increase of 2.93 per cent and 10.78 per cent respectively.

Railways are making all out efforts to maximize its revenue from its core activity of transportation of freight and passengers. In this direction, throughout enhancement works have been taken up for removal of capacity constraints in critical section for capturing more traffic. Numbers of passenger trains are being introduced and frequencies of existing trains are also being increased in order to increase passenger earnings. Besides, Railways are also exploring the avenues of revenue generation by commercial exploitation of railway land not required for operational purpose, especially in metro areas through development of commercial and residential complexes and through advertisements at prominent locations on railway land, trains and at stations. Additional revenue is also anticipated from setting up of budget hotels by Indian Railway Tourism and Catering Corporation.
On the expenditure side, Railways are taking all possible measures for economy and austerity in every area, with emphasis on better utilization of assets and rolling stock, improved maintenance practices through superior and latest technology, right sizing and increasing the efficiency of manpower etc. Adequate funds are being provided for safety and security as per requirement.
This information was given by the Minister of State for Ministry of Railways, Dr. R. Velu in a written reply in Rajya Sabha today.

The total passenger revenue earnings during the period 1st to 10th February 2009 were Rs. 643.79 crore compared to Rs. 624.18 crore during the same period last year, reflecting a increase of 3.14 per cent. The revenue earnings from other coaching amounted to Rs. 56.12 crore during this period compared to Rs. 47.93 crore during the same period last year, showing an increase of 17.09 per cent.
The total approximate number of passengers booked during the period 1st to 10th February 2009 were 204.99 million compared to 180.41 million during the same period last year, showing a decrease of 13.62 per cent. In the suburban and non-suburban sectors, the number of passengers booked during 1–10 February 2009 were 113.62 million and 91.37 million compared to 102.06 million and 78.35 million during the same period last year, registering an increase of 11.33 per cent and an increase of 16.62 per cent respectively.

The total approximate number of passengers booked during the period 11th to 20th February 2009 were 205.54 million compared to 191.03 million during the same period last year, showing an increase of 7.60 per cent. Railway revenue earnings during April’08- February’09 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12:9 IST The total approximate earnings of Indian Railways on originating basis during 1st April, 2008 – 28th February, 2009 were Rs. 71765.77 crore compared to Rs. 64067.52 crore during the same period last year, registering an increase of 12.02 per cent.
The total goods earnings have gone up from Rs. 43283.39 crore during 1st April’07-28th February’08 to Rs. 48800.85 crore during 1st April’08 - 28th February’09, registering an increase of 12.75 per cent.
The total passenger revenue earnings during first eleven months of the financial year 2008-09 were Rs. 19906.81 crore compared to Rs. 17934.08 crore during the same period last year, registering an increase of 11 per cent.
The revenue earnings from other coaching amounted to Rs. 1803.88 crore during April’08-February’09 compared to Rs. 1690.34 crore during the same period last year, an increase of 6.72 per cent.
The total sundry earnings have gone up from Rs. 1159.71 crore during April’07-February’08 to Rs. 1254.23 crore during April’08-February’09, showing an increase of 8.15 percent.
The total approximate number of passengers booked during April’08-February’09 was 6485 million compared to 6099.25 million during the same period last year, showing an increase of 6.32 per cent. In the suburban and non-suburban sectors, the number of passengers booked during April-February 2009 was 3465.89 million and 3019.11 million compared to 3372.75 million and 2479.24 million during the same period last year, an increase of 2.76 per cent and 10.73 per cent respectively.

RAILWAY REVENUE EARNINGS UP BY 11.06 PER CENT DURING FINANCIAL YEAR 2008-09
The total approximate earnings of Indian Railways on originating basis during April 2009 were Rs. 6635.02 crore compared to Rs. 6414.87 crore during the same period last year, registering an increase of 3.43 per cent.
The total goods earnings have gone up from Rs. 4382.81 crore during April 2008 to Rs. 4525.27 crore during April 2009, showing an increase of 3.25 per cent.
The total passenger revenue earnings during the April 09 were Rs. 1853.06 crore compared to Rs. 1794.02 crore during the same period last year, registering an increase of 3.29 per cent.
The revenue earnings from other coaching and sundry amounted to Rs. 256.69 crore during April 2009 compared to Rs. 238.04 crore during the same period last year, showing an increase of 7.83 per cent.
The total approximate number of passengers booked during April 2009 were 589.99 million compared to 572.88 million during the same period last year, showing an increase of 2.99 per cent. In the suburban and non-suburban sectors, the number of passengers booked during April 2009 were 301.26 million and 288.73 million compared to 300.59 million and 272.29 million during the same period last year, an increase of 0.22 per cent and 6.04 per cent respectively.
The total approximate earnings of Indian Railways on originating basis during the financial year 2008-09 were Rs. 80338.10 crore compared to Rs. 72338.16 crore during fiscal 2007-08, registering an increase of 11.06 per cent.
The total goods earnings have gone up from Rs. 48291.15 crore during 1st April 2008 - 31st March, 2009 to Rs. 54142.52 crore during 1st April 2007 - 31st March 2008, registering an increase of 12.12 per cent.
The total passenger revenue earnings during the financial year 2008-09 were Rs.22071.34 crore compared to Rs. 19837.07 crore during fiscal 2007-08, registering an increase of 11.26 per cent.
The revenue earnings from other coaching amounted to Rs. 1994.43 crore during April 2008-March 2009 compared to Rs. 1864.52 crore during the financial year 2007-08, registering an increase of 6.97 per cent.
The total approximate number of passengers booked during April 2008-March 2009 was 7097.60 million compared to 6678.85 million during the same period last year, showing an increase of 6.27 per cent. In the suburban and non-suburban sectors, the number of passengers booked during April 2008-March 2009 was 3789.03 million and 3308.57 million compared to 3688.22 million and 2990.63 million during the same period last year, an increase of 2.73 per cent and 10.63 per cent respectively.

The total approximate number of passengers booked during the period 1st to 10th May 2009 were 201.10 million compared to 194.32 million during the same period last year, showing an increase of 3.49 per cent. In the suburban and non-suburban sectors, the number of passengers booked during 1–10 May 2009 were 100.57 million and 100.53 million compared to 103.47 million and 90.85 million during the same period last year, registering a decrease of 2.80 per cent and an increase of 10.65 per cent respectively.

In the suburban and non-suburban sectors, the number of passengers booked during 11–20 May 2009 were 105.85 million and 99.39 million compared to 100.79 million and 90.17 million during the same period last year, registering an increase of 5.02 per cent and 10.23 per cent respectively.

India railways earnings up 3.34 pct in Apr-May Reuters - Wednesday, June 17SendIM StoryPrint.NEW DELHI, June 16 - The earnings of Indian Railways rose by 3.34 percent in first two months of financial year 2009/10 to 137.09 billion rupees as revenue from transport of goods showed sluggish growth, an official statement said on Tuesday.
In April-May, railways' earnings from transport of goods grew by 2.34 percent to 93.40 billion rupees against 91.27 billion rupees a year ago, said the statement issued by the Ministry of Railways.
The revenue earnings from passenger traffic were up 5.35 percent in two months to 38.31 billion rupees as compared to 36.37 billion rupees a year ago, it added.
