4 Prime Ministers suffered ailments during their tenure
New Delhi (PTI): Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is not the only one to face health problems while holding the most powerful post in the country, as four of his predecessors suffered ailments during their tenure, including the country's first Premier Jawaharlal Nehru.

The recent was Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee who in November 2000, had undergone a left knee joint replacement at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai.

Dr Chittranjan Ranawat, the US-based surgeon, had operated on the then Prime Minister.

The 12th Prime Minister of the country, P V Narasimha Rao had a heart problem because of which he had to take repeated medical aid.

Rao underwent a bypass heart surgery in the US in 1991 before taking over as the Prime Minister. He died of cardiac arrest on December 23, 2004.

Similarly, Lal Bahadur Shastri who was Prime Minister during Congress-led government between June 9, 1964 and January 11, 1966 had a heart attack soon after he took over as Prime Minister in 1964.

Following the attack, he had to cancel his visit to the Commonwealth Prime Ministers conference in London.

The first Prime Minister of the country, Jawaharlal Nehru also suffered from heart ailments.

He suffered a stroke during a Congress Session in Bhubaneswar in January 1964.

PM has 3 arteries blocked, surgery underway
24 Jan 2009, 1306 hrs IST,

NEW DELHI: A team of doctors led by surgeon Ramakant Panda and assisted by AIIMS doctors are engaged in a redo (repeat) bypass operation on Prime
Minister Manmohan Singh - the 76-year-old leader who is the Congress candidate for a second-term prime ministership in the event of a UPA victory in the polls. ( Watch )

"Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was wheeled into the operation theatre at 5:30am. The operation finally began at 7:15am and is expected to last for 7-8 hours," said Dr Sudhir Vaishnav, cardio-vascular thoracic surgeon with the Asian Heart Institute (ASI).

According to doctors, tests have shown that the Prime Minister has three arteries blocked. This includes two grafts done during his bypass surgery in 1990 in UK and a stenting done in 2004 at Escorts.

The success rate of bypass surgeries is high. However, a repeat bypass is little more complicated. The surgery, according to sources, could last for seven-eight hours. Given the fact that the Prime Minister is a diabetic, the recovery period might be more.

NEW DELHI: People from all walks of life on Saturday offered special prayers at religious places across the country for the speedy recovery of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who underwent a coronary bypass surgery.

At the Golden Temple in Amritsar, head priest Gyani Jaswinder Singh led the prayers, which were attended by Dr. Singh’s brother, Surjit Singh Kohli, while a special puja was organised at the Kamakhya temple in Guwahati for 76-year-old Singh, who is a Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament from Assam. “We are also aware that millions of our countrymen and Punjabis all over the world are praying for his good health,” Mr. Kohli said.

Other shrines in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Kolkata, Amritsar and Guwahati also saw special prayers for Dr. Singh.

In Kanpur, prayers were held at the Mata Vaibhav temple and organisers said they lighted the ‘akhand jyoti’ (holy flame) which would continue till the Prime Minister recovered fully.

A sigh of relief

Indrani Dutta reports from Kolkata:

Dr. Singh’s sisters, who stay in the city, heaved a sigh of relief on receiving news of his successful surgery, even as they, along with family members, participated in long prayer sessions at gurdwaras and remained glued to the TV sets.

In the morning, people from all religions congregated at a gurdwara, just as the operation began. West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee sent a bouquet, along with a get-well message, to Dr. Singh through the State government’s New Delhi office.

Pritam Kaur, younger sister of Dr. Singh, told The Hindu that she was feeling better after receiving news of the successful surgery.

“Not only at our place of worship, the gurdwara, but all through the day I have had a prayer for my brother on my lips” she said.

Congressmen’s prayers

Pradip Bhattacharyya, Pradesh Congress working president, said partymen had congregated at a gurdwara in south Kolkata, just as the surgery began in the morning. The congregation comprised people from various faiths, including Hindus, Muslims and Christians.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday underwent a successful coronary by-pass surgery at AIIMS, a complex beating-heart operation that took nearly 14 hours.
"The operation is successful. The Prime Minister was shifted to Intensive Care Unit at 2055 hours," the Prime Minister's Media Advisor Deepak Sandhu said.

The surgery began at 0715 hours and was conducted by a team of doctors headed by Dr Rama Kanat Panda of Mumbai's Asian Heart Institute.

It was extremely successful and was absolutely without any problem. It was on course, said Dr Sudhir Vaishnav, cardio-vascular thoracic surgeon and Director of AHI, who was constantly in touch with Panda from Mumbai.

Asked why the operation took so long, Vaishnav said since it was a second by-pass surgery on Prime Minister, "it usually takes this long." He said there were no major complications.

Heart bypass, which the Prime Minister had undergone 18 years ago in London, involves grafting of arteries of veins from elsewhere in the patient's body to the coronary arteries to bypass atherosclerotic narrowings and improve the blood supply to the coronary circulation supplying the heart muscle.

Six years ago, Singh had also undergone an angioplasty. This was the first time that a beating-heart surgery, that involves doing the operation without stopping the heart, was performed in AIIMS.

"His condition remained stable during the surgery and utmost care was being taken to prevent any bleeding because of the stitching," Vaishnav said.
