LUDHIANA: In an initiative to ensure public satisfaction, railway authorities have decided to start registering passengers’ complaints online.
Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) would now take online opinions of commuters with regard to food quality. In response to several complaints against bad quality food being served in trains as well as that available at vendor stalls, railway authorities are taking strict measures.

Authorities have already provided various options for commuters to register their complaints with the departments concerned. Commuters could register complaints even while travelling in the train on the railway enquiry number. Authorities are now believing that the online complaint system would definitely help them because people are largely techno-savvy.

According to information, commuters would have to visit the IRCTC website where railway power supply unit would seek an opinion in response to the question: ‘‘How was on board catering on your last railway journey?’’ Passengers could click on an option saying ‘satisfactory’ or ‘unsatisfactory’. The feedback gathered through the opinion poll would help authorities in improving the food quality.

In a pointer to the fact that a number of passengers are internet-savvy, sources have revealed that IRCTC has received a good response to online reservation of tickets. Booking of tickets on internet has gone up to 44.1 million against 19.9 million tickets booked last year.

‘‘A lot needs to be done to improve the quality of the food. It is good that the authorities want to know the general opinion of passengers, but the exercise would serve the purpose only if changes are made accordingly,’’ said Suresh Chadha, a commuter.

Talking to TOI, Jagdish Goyal, area manager, IRCTC, said commuters would be able to give their opinion online. They had received complaints that commuters did not get complaint registers. It would now be easy for them to give them their opinion about food items on offer. After that, they would be able to review the results of the opinion poll and incorporate changes, he added.
