Rlys to identify partner for Bengal thermal power station

Kolkata/New Delhi, July 3 Indian Railways will shortly identify the joint venture partner for its proposed 1,000 MW thermal power station at Adra in the tribal-dominated Purulia district of West Bengal bordering Jharkhand.

The project will be located on surplus land available with the Railways, close to the coal belts of both West Bengal and Jharkhand.

The Railway Minister, Ms Mamata Bannerjee, announced that the project would be taken up in collaboration with the power ministry. Accordingly, a meeting is to be held shortly between the two ministries to identify the JV partner for implementing the project, it is learnt.

Expressing interest in the proposed project, sources in National Thermal Power Corporation and Damodar Valley Corporation, said that they were yet to receive any communication in this regard from the railway ministry.

Railways has already formed a 26:74 joint venture – Bhartiya Rail Bijlee Co Ltd - with NTPC for setting up a 1,000 MW (4 X 250 MW) thermal power plant at Nabinagar in Bihar.

According to an NTPC source, the alliance hopes to be in possession of around 750 acres by August out of the total requirement of 1,342 acres. The balance land is expected to be acquired by October-end.
